Do you still watch Grand Designs?

UK version?

I don’t think I have caught up on old episodes yet.

I was hoping they would do a special like they did a couple of years ago about the street.

UK version , I started to lose interest in it but as it's filmed over a couple of years i'll give it another go to see if Brexit and the Pandemic got in the way.

Basically every episode from last years series, plodding along and then covid hit and they came to a halt and eventually finished it to some degree.

Some of the buildings ended up not being so grand so kind of missed the point. I do like it when they come up with some real grand designs.

George Clarke did something similar recently that was quite interesting to watch some of their builds. Not as big a budget but still some nice design and builds.

Herself is a big fan, but is a big fan of form over function

I look at all the sharp edges, multilevel floors and open staircases and think how low my chances of getting from front door to bed after a night on the ale would be without suffering serious injury.

I still quite like it and will no doubt watch the current series. I like seeing different designs and its influenced some of the choices I have made over the years with decor or house type although I would love to have a home built to my exact spec.

It has turned into a bit of a Kevin Bingo game though, Budget, overspend, Optimistic :)

We still watch it, it seems to follow the same pattern now though with something going wrong and then going massively over budget. I've always liked the idea of eventually building my own place but this show has completely put me off the idea in recent years. The one where the bloke tried to build that lovely home on the cliffs (Devon I think it was?) and ended up losing everything (including his wife) was brutal.

Edit: I've just looked it up and he has plans to finish it this year. Could be a good revisited episode!

Yeah, love any self build TV shows

I used to love watching an Australian 'self build' program called The Block. Its basically a renovation competition where 4 couples get given a wreck and have to renovate it over the course of 6 months or so. They get given challenges along with a room to complete each week. It seems pretty popular as its on 20+ seasons now.

They stopped showing it on UK TV years ago and haven't found anywhere else yet that shows it :(

I watched one similar to this, he was disabled and wanted to build a modern self sufficient wheelchair friendly home. Built the house but towards the end his wife left him because of the stress it put on the family. He ended up living in this massive house all by himself :(

Good program.

I started watching the Swedish one too and some of the money being spent is sick.....

I can barely think of a single episode where they build on schedule and to budget, but somehow that is part of the fascination of watching the show.

That always ruined it for me tbh.

Couple with a £300k budget go and build a £700k home and live happily ever after. Yeah, okay...

I love it, and last nights episode was mind boggling…

Initial estimate of £800k, then ends up spending £2.5 million…..yoinks!

I used to enjoy it more when it took nice homes within the stretch of reality for normal people and turned them into something great. Now it's just millionaires showing off so has become a bit stale imo.

Got to wonder how that house got through planning given it's location. Sounds a bit dodgy to me and no doubt given the development work his company does and how wealthy he is, some deal got done for sure.

100% some deals/brown envelopes crossed some palms
