Do you swerve out the way for animals?

Want in a car but was going at a fair pace on my bike in the wood today.....damned bloody squirels, about 5 or 6,ran out from my right all made it except one, slammed the brakes and it was literally right on my front wheel when it darted back the other way. Glad i turned the tyres round so i could have braking grip or i woulda decked it.

/story of my day. :D

was on my push bike not motorbike

I swerve to avoid as many animals as possible. Being on a motorbike i can imagine hittin the smallest of vermin and something bad happening like loosing traction.

Went over something dead on a country road once while going round a corner, Back wheel jumped a bit and gave me a shock

If its a situation where I could potentially harm myself or another human, I would not swerve. However, if safe to do so I would slam on the anchors to avoid cats, dogs, deer rabbits etc, have you seen the amount of damage they can do for their size?? ;)

back to the OP, if I was going to miss the pidgeon, yes I would :p

I flashed a pigeon to make it bloody move today. It was a back road with a big turn coming up so I sure as hell weren't about to do any hero crap. It worked :D Pigeons respond to headlights!

I ran over a squirrel yesterday, couldn’t swerve or stop as I had a white van up my chuff. Only thing is I couldn’t find it after. It defiantly went under the car and never came out. It wasn’t squashed or flattened it just vanished.

I will have a good look at the weekend see if it’s tangled up somewhere underneath.

The last animal I hit for a pigeon.

I was going down hill at 70mph and it was in the middle of the road. I was hoping that the car would just pass over it but no, the stupid thing decided to fly up...not good for Mr. Pigeon.

I had to lever his head out of my grill. Yummy...specially before lunch.

The one before that was a deer. I was going 60mph round a bend and it was just running from the side of the road into the middle. I didn't have time to brake, and I certainly didn't want to swere as I would have gone into the trees at the side of the road or worse hit the oncoming car.

Had there not have been an oncoming car I still wouldn't have swerved because it was running across to the other lane, wrong place, wrong time I think.

If I could avoid it, obviously I would.

EDIT: Just remebered a more recent event where a cat ran out into the road in front of me in a residential area. I stopped in time for it and the kid at the side of the road was just laughing at me lol. Didn't want to hit someones pet.

I dont Swerve, If i see them on the road i slow down and pull out around them if its not too big or fast.

If its fast or cat or dog size just doesnt sit on the road its Brakes on and head straight or turn on a small angle and just hope i dont collect it.

Swerving is just far too risky and can end up being much worse

Exactly. At least if you hit the animal you know what's going to happen. If you take evasive actions then it could go **** up.

More related to bikes, but I was told...

"If its small enough to eat in a single meal its ok to hit"

I swerved a rabbit the other day, but only because it was a long straight road with nothing infront or behind me.

I like rabbits.

As you drove over it, you should have also shouted " LOL " in her face.

HAHAHAHA , that comment brightened up this gloomy day for me.

Or should have added 'lol dead' !

I locked up once in instinct as a rabbit steped out infront of me, only once though. I've crunched probably 20 ish over the years.

My current problem is with birds flying straight out of the hedges into the side of my car. I didn't mind the 2 pidgeons but the pheasant left a scratch :(

EDIT: also locked up trying to miss Bambi, it went just under the corner of my bumper and scurried off.

No , im not risking my life for an animal, but it really depends on the size cos id rather swerve if its going to damage my car :p

Dunno about animals but I have to make a very fast reflex sweve earlier today passing a van, as the driver threw open the door as I was passing by it

I try and avoid collisions with wild animals but it's 70% instinct and 30% to avoid the mess/damage to my car. Don't really care about the animal itself.

Pretty much my attitude. Even a pigeon can, and probably will, dent the car or smash a light. Once up to furry mammals I tend to avoid them because it seems silly to kill them just because I'm too lazy to move the controls. Unless it would lead to an accident of course. In sixteen years my total is two partidges (a the same time), a blackbird, and two rabbits. At the cost of a broken sidelight.

What the hell is a "pidgeon"
Do they not teach English at school any longer?

If I can avoid hitting anything I will, if it is a case of swerve or hit animal though, the animal gets iced.

i do swerve out of the way for them

but not for any reason out of consideration for their feelings or anything daft like that

just always find myself doing it. sub concious thing about not wanting to hit anything i think.
