Do you think there is anything that could not be tortured out of you?

if it was to protect family then i would not talk ,if it was sum1 torturing you them they prob kill you soon as you gave the info up so longer you dont longer they will keep you alive.

The thing is...If youve been tortured long enough and theres no hope then you WILL wish you could die so easily..

I lived through a week of incredible pain once and I came really close to wishing I was dead...i swear I started going crazy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterboarding

According to the sources, CIA officers who subjected themselves to the water boarding technique lasted an average of 14 seconds before caving in. They said al Qaeda's toughest prisoner, Khalid Sheik Mohammed, won the admiration of interrogators when he was able to last over two minutes before begging to confess.

I'd like to think that I would hold out as long as possible. But with techniques such as waterboarding, I doubt that would be very long.

Truth is, no one knows how they are going to react under torture.

I think a lot of would like to think that we wont say things to hurt our family but based on experiances of people who have been tortured and people who have done the torturing the likelyhood is that the vast majority of people will crack.

if on average the cia agents lasted just 14 seconds with waterboarding what happens when some psycho decides to gouge theyre eyes out or soemthing just as bad/sick :S

No. Everyone breaks eventually.

Just to throw a spin on things...

Dictators like Stalin have used various torture methods on people throughout the ages, stopping once the information was extracted from the victim.

In Stalins case, the victim was then 'decommissioned' via the firing squad, or torture simply continued for the sheer hell of it.

Therefore, there is an equally good chance that even after you give all the information to your interrorgators, they'll still torture and/or kill you anyway.

This thread is rather amusing and I think far too many people watch 24 and think they're Jack Bauer ;)

I'm willing to bet that 99.9999% of people would crack more or less instantly after the first infliction of pain (unless they're secretly in the SAS / a secret agent / etc / etc and have had some level of preperation for such circumstances).

Teeth ripped out with pliers, digits cut off, eyes burnt out, sodomy, beatings, bones broken, electrocution, burnt, branded, etc, etc, you'd al be squealing like pigs

well it really depends on, if you want to die or how your value life. you could always chew your tongue too kill yourself and break your nose.

It'd be a battle of wills and Im a stubborn sonofa...u know

chances are if someones willing to torture you, they dont really care if you live or die and chances are if they torture you badly enough they wont let u go so you can tell people about it, the way to survive longest would therefore be to not crack but give the impression that you will and just endure the worst tortures until they get tired of using them and revert to more psycological methods and appear most likely to cooperate when they use the less brutal tortures while being most defiant when they use the worst, in effect training them to use what they think is most effective with u, if they need information badly enough they'll not want to risk making you more defiant

I really don’t think that there is any way to answer this question properly unless you have actually experienced it, I would like to think that I could hold out, but the amount of horrific and agonising things that could be done to the human body doesn’t even bear thinking about. I think the average Joe Bloggs would be babbling in no time.

Perhaps having a series of stories to fall back on is the best form of enduring interrogation, giving the impression that you are giving up important information, but with lack of sleep, food and water it would be all to easy to slip up and end up in an even worse predicament.

People have no doubt admitted to doing things they have not even done just to try and end the pain of torture, it really is a horrible thing to think about.

Please, no more! After trying to read that sentence I'll tell you anything you want to know!

Agreed. Sacrificing your own life quickly to protect someone is one thing, but being slowly tortured, quite another.

Personally I think, i may be able to deal with psychological torture and i think taht people with a strong will can (goes without saying though that I can't exactly be sure of this until I experience it :p just a speculation) but physical, i'l probably crack soon :( (as much as i'd like to think otehrwise)
