Do you think there should be time limits for exams?

No because people write at different speeds and think at different speeds, not usually much you can do about it.

That's not an argument why a word limit is fairer, at most it's an argument why a time limit is unfair to people who complete exams more slowly. Even then it's somewhat specious because there has to be some limit on exams and you could easily argue that with a word limit you're penalising the people who can't express themselves succinctly.

The idea of the word limit is that it's high enough that anyone who knows their stuff will have reached full marks before they reach it. But it then stops people who don't know their stuff, trying to waffle on and gain marks through quantity.

Identical to a time limit then. There is pretty much zero difference. If you are pushed for time you're writing a wall of pointless text and not simply awnsering the question and should ask for help on exam technique.

But your argument doesn't work, becuase the time limit is exactly the same thing.

It gives enough time for people who know their stuff to get the marks, and it stops people who don't know their marks from having ages and ages to come up with an answer.

EDIT: Beaten by above.

I happen to fall in to the group of people who do well in tests. I do AWFULLY in coursework because I just **** it off until the last moment, when there is then absolutely no time at all to do it and the pressure is too much :p :o

So yeah, timed tests all the way. If it's not a timed test then surely it's just like being given a piece of coursework to complete in a controlled environment and just handing it in when you're finished
