So it's my 40th in May and all.the family are wondering what I want for birthday. I never know what I want and so just end up with vouchers or a few clothes.

Everything I 'want' is mega expensive and everyone's saying as it's a milestone I should ask for something to treasure.

I did consider a smart watch but with tech moving so fast I think in a few years it'll be obsolete and a new one will be needed. My fiancée said a nice watch but I'm not really in to watches.

So then I thought of experiences but feel they're overpriced. I did a rally course at brands hatch about 10 years ago and it was about 4hrs of talking and 20 mins driving.

So anyone throw some ideas my way. As this is GD i expect lots of funny comments mixed in with a few sensible suggestions.

Thanks

Interested in this thread as I also turn 40 this year.

The thing with the big 4-0 is that it's not really midlife crisis territory, so you can forget buying a porsche....that leaves general stuff like watch, holiday, experience day...yawn!

Maybe a fantastic weekend away....New York perhaps? I know it's a bit of a cliche, but it's not THAT expensive (£299 return flights if you shop around), 3 nights in a hotel plus spending money. Don't need to go mad, and you'll have great memories.

Failing that, coke and hookers! and being 40 it's not such a daft idea

Well my fiancee already booked a 4 day trip to Iceland in November for Northern Lights. So that's my special treat from her. It's the rest of the family that I'm struggling to advise.

as I see it:

some tat you can 'treasure'

a meal out with everyone which is great (if you like them) but nothing to show for it

Ask them to buy something for themselves with the money they would spend on you, then when their birthday's roll around do that same but buy one of the expensive things you want with all the money you've saved buying other people useless tat! :D

My wife booked a long weekend away to Centre Parcs for me for my 40th, which involved all of my family also turning up as a surprise. My birthdays in December so all the usual Christmas stuff on display too, brilliant time had.

Ive booked my wife a week in Memphis in May for her 40th, massive Elvis fan so that will be one off her bucket list also.

For my 40th, I arranged a trip to Le Mans.

Pick something that you've always wanted to do, and make time and just do it. Tangible things break, or get outdated, but memories last a lifetime.

I bought myself a nice Automatic Watch and a 5 night trip to NY for my 40th. Got a little bit of money to spend in NY from my family.
