Dead hard drive?
I just bought a WD 500gb AAKS and an external akasa enclosure to go with it. Ive set it up correctly, tried to format but it fails. I can hear some odd clicking coming from the drive when it trys to read...
Obviously i bought these from ocuk, paying the crazy £8 delivery price.

Just tried it in the pc, using my external sata to usb lead, akasa caddy, icebox.
Tried windows format and it failed. Loaded up gparted and tried through that and it failed but it did tell me the hd couldnt synchronise or something... anyway i dont like this clicking it is making so it must be dead.
How do i go about returning a faulty hd and getting another?

Quite a lot of the akasa caddies dont support more than 400GB. I would take it out of the caddy and put it in your PC just to test.

I was going to buy the Intergral P2 SATA caddy for my bro till I saw the 400GB limit in the spec, however the website I saw it on no longer has the limit but if you google you will find some others do;

Features:
Easy to install
Supports any 3.5" IDE PATA or SATA HDD up to 400Gb
E-SATA transfer speeds upto 1.5Gb/s
E-SATA or USB 2.0 transfer switchable
Sleek aluminium case for efficient heat dissipation
Easy stack design for smart use of space
Blue LED power and access indicator
Plug and Play hot swapable
OS Support Win 98SE/ME/2000/XP, Mac OS 8.6 and above

Checking the Akasa website for 3.5" Enclosure - Integral P2 E-SATA also doesn't state a limit (that I can see).

However I would still try the hard drive in your PC - it will only take a min to plug it in, its not hard and atleast you can be sure the caddy isn't b0rked.

I didn't see the limit on OCUK - didnt know they had it in stock. Ended up going for an Icybox as it said "no limit". I downloaded the user manual from akasa and it says there is no limit so I was obviously wrong - well, the website that state it had a limit.

Just received my hard drive replacement, works perfectly in the akasa case and is extremely quiet. Very nice setup when it works :)
