I'm pretty sure this is a dead piece of equipment, but just to throw it out there. bought a brand new hard drive (external - Seagate)

Plug it in via USB, nothing happens. check disk management, volume is there but the disk needs to be initialized before it can be formatted, try and initialize the disk and get the following error;

"The operation failed to complete because the Disk Management console view is not up-to-date. Refresh the view by using the refresh task. If the problem persists close the DM console, then restart DM or restart the computer"

Restarting all the above changes nothing. same error

Thanks

Yup, was plugged in directly to PC. interestingly it would like me initialize it if I chose GPT (guid partition table) rather than MBR, after this was working i just took the disk offline and in disk management changed it to MBR, very weird sequence but it seems to be working now. thanks =)
