DOC and under 25's

Elephant is simply 'not owned by you or leased to you under hire-purchase'. They're definitely over-25s only though, I remember checking last year as having turned 25 DOC had just appeared on my policy.

No, they'll offer it to under 25's if they take out a policy but they wont give me a quote because of my age - I'm sure if I wanted to insure a Clio 1.2 I'd get a quote with DOC.

I'm 21 with Quinn Direct and they've given me DOC

Do you lack faith in your driving ability mate? ;)

No, but sods law says if you're going to have a mistake it's going to be when driving someone else's car TPO. If I wouldn't be happy driving my own car of a certain value TPO I wouldn't want to drive someone else's.

Smallprint which says it must be insured by someone else is rare and mostly internet hearsay.

I believe bell's DOC now includes this very smallprint dude. Be careful. I was checking out their small print the other day.

It's very useful because it means you never have to think "oh crap, insurance" if you need to jump into a different car for a day.

The thing is that its TPO. Not many cars i'd risk driving without comp!

Useful feature absolutely, i'd always take it if its cheap or free, but i wouldnt go out of my way to have it.

I'd never put someone elses property in the position where it would be my fault if anything happened to it. But I understand what you are saying.

What do you do in the event which i am in right now?

I'm stationary, not even in gear. Bint smashes into my mercedes. Shes blaming me, it might go 50/50.

Why do you want this anyway?

Is it just to drive family cars? Surely, you're 25 soon, it shouldn't be extra to add you onto the other policies?

Doubt it, other than the FTO and possibly the mondeo if they still have it, i cant see that any of his families cars are even close to being cheap enough that you could risk tpo.

can you not go on confused.com and try that? i'm sure it asks about other vehicles on it as i had to double check for my policy as well. :)

I'm sure Zurich gave it to me on my previous Golf MK5 and i'm 24, that is before it was stolen... Grrrrr.

Ok, so say a friend of mine bought an old banger, but kept it MOT'ed and taxed, I'd be allowed to use it now and again when the need arises (if I had DOC cover)?

yeah you never know what might happen, you would be better off being named a 2nd driver if you were going to be driving another car, even if only a few times a year the few hundred quid would be better than total loss of the car, what if someone rams you then speeds off? or if they claim it was your fault, or if there was some oil or petrol on the road or ice which caused the car in anyones hands to become a loose cannon

I had DOC on my direct line insurance way before I was 25. I was only driving a group 7 car though.

I'm with directline and they won't let me have DOC until i'm 25. I rang them few days ago. My car is group 6! I'm gonna be 24 this year. DOC would be useful for me.

Yes, but that's not really what DOC is all about.

DOC is for when someone one says to you "Have you ever driven a new XXXX, come on lets go round the block, I'll drive there and you can have a go of mine on the way back"

Or when your mate says "I've had a skinful dude, but my cars out the front of the pub. You're sober, do me a favour and move it round the corner outside my Nans for me"

Or when, on the way home from a weekend away with friends, the driver says "I'm really tired and about to fall asleep at the wheel, can someone take over"

That sort of thing.

For the above things Dayinsure or being a named driver are overkill IMO, and I expect that's why Fox is keen to get a policy with DOC.
