DOC Cover Question

I'm about to renew my insurance and I have the option of adding DOC cover onto my policy for a small cost.

My question is, it says I can drive any car not owned by me and I'll be insured third party only etc. But what about the car I am driving? Say I were to drive my dads car, and on his insurance policy - his driver entitlement is stated as 'Named Driver Only'... will I not be able to drive his car unless his driver entitlement is stated as 'Open Drive' ?

i.e. am I only allowed to drive other cars, which're insured as 'Open Drive' only?

Your own car is whatever you paid for in the policy.

Anyone else's car is 3rd party on your policy.

Your dads car is either 3rd party on your policy, or whatever your dad paid for to have you a named driver on his policy.

Should you crash his car you have a choice of 2 policies to make the claim on:

Say you do damage to someone elses car but little or no damage to your dads car you'd be better claiming on your DOC cover, that way your dad keeps his NCB and doesn't throw you out of the house.

But if you wrote off your dads car, you'd be better claiming on his policy (assuming it's Fully Comp.)

The reason I am asking is because when I done an insurance quote with Quinn-Direct, they asked me if I wanted an 'Named Driver Only' or 'Open Drive' policy.

Driver entitlement outlines who is insured to drive the vehicle. If you choose named driver only then only drivers named on this policy are insured to drive the vehicle. If you choose open drive then any driver who is 26 years or older with a valid Irish/UK/EU licence are insured to drive this vehicle.

If I were to choose 'Named Driver Only', can other people drive my car with their DOC cover?

yes,

If they have doc (on there insurance) they can drive yours, if they don't then they can't.

If they don't have doc and you want them to drive your car you would need open policy.

Ah thanks for clarifying AcidHell2, so DOC means I can drive anyones car regardless of their insurance entitlement.

Only wanted to clarify as I will sometimes need to drive my parents cars, and instead of being added onto both their insurance, I'm going to use my doc cover from my own insurance.

Also cheers Biggles, if anything minor happens I'll claim off my DOC cover, as I wont be a named driver on my dads car.

Also make sure the fine print doesn't require you to be over 25 to use your DOC cover.

I've seen insurance companies sell people DOC cover which they aren't old enough to use many times.

you do realise that DOC cover is 3rd party only if you crash your dads car the insurance won't repair it only the other car you crash into will be repaired :)
