Doctors appointments .

Go on the NHS website and book an appointment for tomorrow then, I don't see what could be easier.

Last time I was ill, it was around 10pm and opened the NHS and booked an appointment for the following morning at around 8am, got a phone call from the doctor who asked some questions then said can you come see me within the hour.

Not all GPs sign up to it. Funnily enough I can't do it for mine.

Can't you book for a different doctor then. I'm sure you're not locked into the practice your registered with. I've seen one in the next town over when I wanted to see one late in the evening.

So went to make an appointment at the doctor's and the earliest I can be seen is in 3 weeks time , is this normal ?

What's the longest You've waited for an appointment ?
Pretty normal sadly, here if you are ill and need to be seen same day you can fill out an online form and they'll triage you same day via phone call and then give you an appointment if needed, but generally to see a GP it's 3+ weeks.

Maybe but I have no idea on how difficult is to get appointments there either. The other complication is that I'm awaiting a decision on a shared care agreement regarding a private prescription being transferred so I don't really want to mess about.
They keep building new housing estates around where I live and yet we are not getting any more doctors surgeries so it's hardly a surprise it's like is.

Which is weird, our population should be dropping due to our birth rate but it's increasing thanks to all the doctors and engineers that are coming over. So...why can't we see one of these doctors?

I tried to get to see a doctor late January
Had to fill in an online eConsult
Doctor phoned me a week later
A blood test was arranged ( was already booked for another issue)
A week later I had a text telling me I likely had "Pernicious Anemia" and that a Nurse would be in touch
Six B12 injections later ( one every two days ) I've still not heard from or seen a Doctor

And it still hasn't addressed the original reason I tried to get an appointment !

If you're not first in the queue at 8am you're SOL here.
It’s such an inefficient process. That eConsult thing mentioned up thread might be useful. Or just going private. Problem with private (at least the ones I’ve read about) is they say they can’t see you for chronic conditions, you have to see the NHS.

8:00 You are number 15 in the queue

There were times when you got through at say 8:05 and they wouldn't have any appointments left. How?!

Never understood why everyone had to phone up at the same time just to attempt to get an appointment for that day. Luckily we can use the NHS app to book these days.

My surgery used to enable us to use the LIVI app which was really handy, but they have since canned it.
i'm convinced doctors use the same booking system as ticketmaster.

3 months and no I’m not exaggerating.

I’d been trying every day, on the dot at 8am and could never get through.I had to write a letter to the practice manager to get them to do something about it.

GPs, NHS, all a joke.

We wonder why A and E is so bad, it’s because people can’t get the care they need at a GP. What choice do they have?

What’s even more annoying is I paid for a private GP. Told I needed to see a Gastroenterologist but because I have no health insurance they couldn’t refer me, I’d have to speak to my own GP. Brilliant.

A private GP can refer to an NHS hospital. At the very least they should have done a letter that your own GP can pass on, but they should have referred

This private GP wouldn’t. He said he’d write to my actual GP. He either didn’t, or my doctors office did nothing with it.

Whichever it is the service is pitiful.

Now living overseas, and easy to see a doc, overseas, but was discussing with local practitioner the other day who used to work in the UK, her opinion was that there has been a significant decline in UK medical care over the last 20 years, and is no longer a 'best in class' example, surpassed by most European nations for actual access and care.
My father in spain was the same no issue seeing a doc and on the nhs too I'm not sure what the arrangement are post brexit though

Mother has been waiting a year or so for a hip replacement can barely walk from one room to the other she's got an appointment on wednesday - for a scan/x-ray no date for the op as yet. Oh and she has to fill in a couple of forms/assesments sent by the GP one an assessment about mobility - should be simple enough she can't walk! Get the operation done and then ask about her mobility its just an exercise in box ticking it feels like

I've got an issue with a toe and the practice nurse said to me just go private to a chiropodist you've got no chance otherwise

I avoid GPs at all costs these days.

I was struggling to breathe last year, had to be pulled out of a meeting to make an emergency call. The receptionist(hearing my wheezing breathlessness) said they couldn’t get me an emergency appointment until later in the day. A member of staff had to phone NHS 24 on my behalf who got the GPs to ring me, told me to immediately get to hospital… I was in for 3 days.

I was diagnosed with asthma and I’ve struggled to get medication ever since. Between delays to only partial prescriptions being sent or only half of my request being ordered…I’m very often without.. it’s an answer machine that takes the requests.

Sadly I’m just abrupt when I phone them now. Abysmal service. All of the nurses at the hospitals just seem to detest them too.

I'm an NHS GP. Lots of bad experiences in here. Feel free to ask any (non medical) questions if you have any

Are you and your colleagues in favour of things like patients being able to self-refer for diagnostic tests (blood tests, scans) if they have a good idea of what's wrong with them?

How do you feel about hybrid NHS / private healthcare where people can pay for certain things themselves if they can afford it?

Why does this 8am telephone booking debacle exist?
