Dodgy cable?

I've just routed a standard patch cable, roughly 40 metres, from a BT homehub 5 ethernet port (one of the four yellow ports) to a netgear gigabit switch upstairs; the link is only coming out at 100Mb.

Is it likely to be a dodgy cable? I can't find my cable tester yet, its in one of a myriad of boxes, I can just re-terminate the cable and try again I guess.

Take a photo of the jack ends.

Make sure each wire is right into the end of the jack.

Yeah on closer inspection of the cable ends it doesn't look like the final (brown) cable is crimping properly. Looks like my crimper might be duff, though hard to imagine how that could happen.

Thats the exact same crimper as the one I have :o.

I've got a cable tester....somewhere....one of the downsides of moving house .

Is it CCA rather than proper copper? I've had issues with it in the past not wanting to do gigabit over a longer run despite being well within spec.
