there are quite a few calculations in this thread that show 0.9r = 1. I haven't really seen any that say it doesn't.

0.9 with as many 9s on the end you can never ever reach the end

0.9*2

would =

1.9r8

an endless supply of 9s onthe end with an 8 but youll never get the 8 cos the 9s are reacuring.

So look at it logical 0.9r is not 1 even though stupid maths stuff says it is it i snot.

You have an endless supply of 9s
so youl aways have the coresponding 0.0r1 to make it to 1
lol - good one. Please tell me, how did you manage to put an 8 on the end of a number that never ends?

Edit:- If this is not good enough for you then you can never be satisfied with any argument on any subject.

Mathematically, 0.9r does indeed equal 1.

Philosophically, perhaps it doesn't. Perhaps it does. Perhaps the internet is just a figment of my imagination. I might just be some random energy floating around in a galaxy far far away, dreaming that I'm a person sat at his computer reading this nonsense. But what *are* dreams? How does sellotape work? Philosophically speaking, I mean.

The field of mathematics is the creation of people who felt the need to quantify how the world works. They defined a set of axioms that must hold true, lest the world stop working. From there they went on to prove lots and lots of clever things, including that 0.9r is equal to 1. They styled themselves as natural philosophers, people for whom the world and its systems held some spiritual and intellectual fascination. They thought outside the box (which at that time was that God created everything and to simply accept it), and started to redefine the box using well-defined and proven theorems to do so.

I guess what I'm getting at is that mathematics got to where it is by people not accepting what they are told, and actually putting some work in to prove/disprove it. If any of you that dispute that 0.9r equals 1 would like to prove it wrong (instead of just saying "I think it's wrong, therefore it is, QED") then please feel free.

you see that doesnt convince me or impress me, because i'll be the first to say I dont understand the smeg what its on about.

doesnt change the fact that in my opinion 0.9r does not = 1

also you maths geezers can make algebra say and do anything you want it to. :p which isnt necessarily proof that it is :p

You ask for proof, then dismiss a perfect proof because you don't understand a word of it. Nice.

Maybe you should make the effort to understand it, as then you'd be able to argue with some authority on the matter instead of waffling as you are now.

Time is infinite. Or can you tell me if/when the universe is going to end and time will cease to exist?

you must be though rounding up that little 0.1r that Acid mentioned to get 0.9r to = 1
Ah yes - AcidHell, looks like he knows what he's talking about! ;)

That's the point, we can't prove something which isn't true. I can't prove that 1+1=3, because it isn't true.

Sorry to butt in, but whilst I fully understand what you're saying about the little bit that's not being accounted for by the "maths heads" (:D), it is not 0.1r.

0.1r is 0.1111111 etc. If it were to be added to 0.9r, the result would be 1.1r. The little bit some people on our side of the argument are referring to is actually a cartload of zeros after the decimal point, with a one on the end, ie:

0.000..........01 :)

you're an embarrassment to those on your side

so why are you entering a discussion that you know nothing about? In my opinion grass isn't green. To everyone else it might be green but say I am colour blind, hence grass cannot be green.

and this is why maths geeks dont get invited to parties :p

I dont have the time to go and study a degree in maths thankyou very much i have a degree in a nother subject. However as it isnt maths I am unable to argue with you ?

come on man have a sense of humour.

You don't need a degree in maths, I sure as hell don't have one. It would help if you understood it before dismissing it really wouldn't it :)
