Does a freesync monitor mean I need an AMD gpu to utilise it?

Basically in the title.

I have a 1070 gpu that needs upgrading eventually anyway.
If I have a freesync monitor does that mean I need an AMD gpu to make most of it?

It depends on the monitor, adaptive sync will work on some of them with a nVidia card.

Certain ones are certified as gsync compatible, others will work but aren't certified and some won't work at all.

The newer cards 20 series also run freesync with hdmi.

For example my samsung tv has freesync and I can't use it with my gtx 1080 but if I upgrade to a 2080 the freesync will work.

Am really talking about monitors here. From what I understand only DisplayPort works with Gsync compatible displays.

Frankly no, i have a Free-Sync monitor, its not an expensive one AOC Q3279VWFD8 Its certainly not marked as "G-Sync compatible" My GTX 1070 ran the screen in G-Sync mode perfectly, turned it on and forgot about it.... it worked well.

That's great. One less thing to worry about

Ah OK I must have missed this.

It was easily missed they didn't mention it in any of the patch notes but there are now many users and youtube videos showing gsync working on 20 series via hdmi on freesync displays.

When they enabled gsync for the new LG OLED HDMI 2.1 vrr they silently enabled gsync over hdmi for older standard freesync displays at the same time.
