Does Aniso filtering override bi/trilinear?

Some games (typically older ones) don't have an option to set the level of AF, but instead offer Bilnear or Trilinear.

Now, if I'm forcing AF through my display driver, is there any point me selecting Trilinear in the game menu? I'm thinking I might get marginally better performance by using Bilinear, as I'm assuming that when AF is applied this will obscure any difference between BF and TF anyway? Or does it not work like that, and I will get superior image quality with TF enabled even with AF already set to 8x?
 
I've always wondered this too. In theory, selecting BF or TF shouldn't affect the image quality as im sure AF will always overwride whatever is applied in game. I'm wondering whether AF is just a seperate layer that builds on top of the "true" filtering (ie BF or TF) in order to operate.
 
The one is independent from the other. If you have bilinear in-game and AF forced in the CP, you will still have rough transitions in the distance where AF is not applied.
 
driver always takes priority unless a profile has been specified for the particular game your running.

For older games Iam setting the driver to high-quality & 16X AF, the options are there and they make older games look a lot better. Don’t forget AA, gamma correct AA and transparency AA.

So I guess this means that one should always have trilinear filtering enabled, regardless of what AF is set to?
