Does anyone else get nervous on voice comms when playing games?

For some reason I get really nervous when using voice comms like Teamspeak or Mumble or Discord when playing a game or even when I'm out of a game. I much prefer to use a forum or some other text based chat when communicating with people. I've just joined a gaming community to play a specific game and they use voice comms all the time and it is effecting my enjoyment in general.

The game I joined to play hasn't been released yet but there is a lot of planning going on. Personally I'd be quite happy to type out all of my plans into a Google Document or something and open it up to collaborative editing but the others seem to enjoy using voice comms.

I've never had to use voice comms in games before even when I was playing MMOs and had to do some heavy raiding. Text always worked well when leading a bunch of people.

So am I the only one in this position or are there others who also get nervous when using voice comms?

Might help you build up your confidence. Just put yourself on push to talk and relax.

Kind of the same here, I don't specifically like talking to people while playing a game unless it's people I know in real life. Prefer to just type chat it's more relaxed for me. I'm happy to listen to voice comm instructions though, mainly for games like World of Warcraft where things need to be said quickly it helps, but no need for me to reply by voice to anything.

Yeah. I guess I should just use it more and hope it becomes easier. I'm not sure why I get so nervous though. I mean I can use the telephone just fine it's just when it is on the computer that it feels weird. Oh well. Practice makes perfect :).

The main problem is that I am in a leadership role so have to give out instructions to people playing underneath me and due to the nature of the game that could be hundreds if not thousands of players.

I am a bit weird in that I don't like using it if other people are in the same room as me (mostly my Wife). If I am on my own I have no problem at all. I have started to force myself to use it a bit more when she is there as there seems to be more and more demand for you using it and I am starting to miss out. Arma 3 is a good example, some roles you are really frowned upon if you are not using voip.

So yea, you're not alone mate :)

I don't.... consider myself particularly extrovert or outspoken but... I've never really had an issue with voice comms.

It's a bunch of folks you'll probably never meet, often never even see again in game.

I feel a bit uneasy and weird when in voice chat with people I don't know but ok with people I know in real life,i suffer from mental health though (had to much fun in the 90s) and can get paranoid at times :)

If you're nervous just have me on so you can laugh at my ridiculous accent. You'll then feel dead comfortable!

The whole problem is down to the fact that you're worried that your family, or neighbours *think* you are talking to yourself. Lose that useless thought and be proud that you can talk to yourself. Practice it, when offline.

Nope, you are not alone.

I have used voice comms on GTA but prefer to stay silent. However when I am helping out on specific goals then I will.

However I usually try to just listen :)

What game is it you are planning for?

Interested in the giving instructions to 100s of players comment.

I used to be the same - but many years of quake 3, COD4, etc. plus eve online and I realised most people just don't give a **** and there is almost always atleast one person who is quite happy to listen to their own voice babbling on about inane stuff for hours so usually no pressure to keep a conversation going or whatever unless its a really small group.

I'd like to use voice comms but honestly, i feel like a complete **** doing so. I am an introvert and listen but don't speak, only really listened on Eve though.

FPS etc I don't see the need, normally just idiots screaming at people because they are so bad and are blaming others.

I believe most online games are enriched massively by using voice comms, certainly from a teamwork aspect. It's much more satisfying achieving a goal (whatever that may be, depending on the game) when you're all chatting away collaboratively and working together. Comparing this to your teammates all individually blundering through things silently, the difference (albeit perhaps requiring first hand experience) is huge.

That's before we even get to the completely game-unrelated laughs that you can have whilst doing so :)

Op, I guarantee your gaming time will be more fun if you join in.

Yep no problem for me either but got so used to it when playing CSS that I miss it now when playing other shooters. Its half the reason I don't enjoy games like Battlefield when playing on my own as you see a threat and cant tell the person in a vehicle with you where etc.

Agree with above though use push to talk rather than auto pick up. No one needs to hear you breathing or talking to someone else in the room with you. That way your in control of what other people hear.

Don't get me wrong if playing with random people I don't treat it like a social thing its purely to tell them where enemies are or items to pick up etc.

I'm not nervous, but I can't think, use a kb+m, and talk at the same time.

Makes it quite difficult in my job for demoing software. I have to rehearse everything otherwise I'm a trainwreck.
