Morning!

Just wondering if anyone gets this...Its happened for a long time and never really thought of it...

Basically on landlines at a particular time, etc the phone will ring you answer then it cuts off...(not prank :p) as it happens at home, work, etc...

Is it anything to do with BT testing?

I'd be more likely to put it down to one of the blanket calling campaigns that some companies indulge in, quite a few seem to have one physical operator calling multiple lines at once and then they go with the first person to pick up but cut off the remainder.

It could be testing I suppose but it sounds a bit odd particularly if it is a regular thing.

Cold calling i believe is the correct word for it, i got a few a while back, i 1471'ed the number typed it into google, it traced back to some company "space kitchens" or something along those lines.
They were a real company although a shady one, if you got through to one of the employees apparently they were instructed to be as abuse as possible to you (as was said by a former employee (or so he claimed))
But it ran deeper than that, it was owned by another company who had a history of doing the same thing etc.
I believe its actually illegal, if you want to find out who it is just google the number.

It will be a company using a dialler system. These diallers basically ring about 7 or 8 people at a time, then whoever is the first to pick up, it will connect to them and hang up on the other 7. It sometimes takes a second or two before the person on the other end gets connected to you and often you might hang up before they get a chance to say anything.

They also work out the average call time of the sales person and if they are on a call and that time starts approaching, it will often start dialling new people in anticipation of the call ending.

They are bloody awful things, I used to have to use one in an old job and they are a nightmare, I ****ing hated using it.

Yeah it's probably a call centre predictive dialer.
They call a lots of numbers at once and when one answers and is put through to an 'agent' it then hangs up on the rest. Usually it hangs up before the phone is answered but sometimes you answer and because no agents are available it hangs up on you, it's called an nuicence call and companies are required to keep the rate at something below a few percent something like 3% I think.

The damn thing here is constantly dialing up to 1000 numbers in anticipation of a call ending then putting it through which is why you sometimes get the small wait before someone speaks.

< works in an outbound call centre although not on the phones, thankfully I only have 5 days left here :D I hated it on the phones.

When will call centres learn.
If I wanted it, i'd go buy it.
Now they've got people rushing to the phone only to prioritise someone else when they answer.

Sorry but I tend to ask to speak to the manager straight away and tell him what I think or hang up, depending on what i'm doing.

I'm pleased to say I'm not getting these calls...yet...but doubtless they will come...
What I am getting are these 'automated' calls with either a male or a female American sounding voice, telling me I've won a free holiday to Burmuda/Caribbean...yeah...right...pass over that free lunch please...

I'm on the Telephone Preference service which does an excellent job of filtering out most cold calls. It's easy and free to use:

Just noticed this on their website:
Silent Calls

If you have been troubled by calls where the phone rings but on answering there is no one there, you can register with a separate service called Silent Callgard.

Silent calls are generated by automatic dialling equipment which dial more numbers than there are operators available to take the calls.

Silent Callgard is a free service, however it may not prevent the receipt of all silent calls as it is a voluntary scheme.

The number to call to register for Silent Callgard is 0844 372 2325.

This service is not managed by the TPS.
