Does anyone else missing waiting for games?

Ever since you could download games legally via places like Steam I've always had that excitement (and fustration) of waiting for a game to download. I often left my connection on over night and just left the game downloading so when I woke up in the morning the game was there and I could play.

Despite being a lot older now (28) I still got that excitement of waiting for a game up until recently when I got a fibre optic connection.

Don't get me wrong, The connection is great and I can get any game from the basket to my computer within 30 minutes but that anticipation and excitement is now gone.

I imagine it's partly because I'm a lot older now and partly because I'm spoilt for choice.

Wondering if anyone else has had this thought?
 
I miss shopping for games as a kid... get your pocket money, down to the games shop to look for the new releases (on TAPE!)

Spend a load of time reading through the manual, load it up and game away. :D
 
Only with pre-orders or with hard copies before you could download games from places like Steam and Origin.
 
My connection is dirt slow (1.5mb) and no signs of future fibre optics around here. I always buy physical copies and feel gutted when there is a 1-2gb at the end of installation. I wish i was in your shoes pal
 
A couple of things I miss are the new game smell when you open the box & being able to play a game straight after it's installed instead of having to download a day one patch.
 
I still get that feeling. Having a 1.5Mb connection doesn't allow me the luxury of same day downloading so I pretty much always buy my games in the shop or have them delivered by Amazon (depending on what's cheapest).
 
I miss not being able to buy games with epic manuals you could take to work with you and have a good skive with. Falcon 4 would be a good example.
 
I still have to wait for downloads, so not suffering too much. For me waiting make the game better, as the suffering was well.worth it.

Yes! Falcon 4 had a massive tome with it.

I can remember spending a long time reading through the BBC Elite manual and the 'novella' that came with it... good times!

Yes! Lunchtime reading an epic game manual preparing yourself for when you got home:D You get an advertisement leaflet at most in cases these days :(
 
I do miss the smell of opening a new BigBox PC game [ Dam I'm old lol ] and a wall of Pc games :) now if u go in a shops ur be lucky to see many pc games :)
 
I have a slow connection which is metered 8am-8pm weekdays and the only good thing about it is you get a strange sense of satisfaction from 'plotting' your downloads. I.e. making sure you take full advantage of overnight and weekend downloads, going up at halftime in the football to kick them off, and basically stockpiling hundreds of fully updated games on your harddrive.

I rarely play games when they are released so it is rare I wait for a specific game anyway, I just stockpile them and then take my pick from the collection. One slight exception was with Sleeping Dogs because I hadn't realised the high res textures were a DLC (3.9GB so roughly a 3hr download) - I had to 'wait' for that before playing as I'm very anal about not playing games unless they are fully patched.

Sell your PC and move to Africa? I seriously don't get the whole 'first world problem' bull everyone seems to go to. :confused: Yeah, some people in poor countries have to worry about whether they can eat or not, but we don't, doesn't mean somebody has to come around and say 'first world problem' everytime somebodies fridge packs up or when somebodies harddrive fills up.

This kinda thing reminds me of the hippies you'd meet at bus stops.

'I just missed my bus for **** sake'.

'So!? THERE ARE CHILDREN STARVING IN AFRICA!'

i miss waiting for a game in the post. especially when i was in school.

all day i would be thinking "has it come has it come". was really exciting walking through door at 4pm to see if it was there or not.

Also echoing the whole big box PC game thing. Just the memory of that still gives me a semi (totes homo).

And jesus, chill out about the whole "OMG I can't believe you were just sarcastic about my first world problem, OMFG". Callllllm dowwwwwwn duuuuude.
