Sent my 40" LCD back due to motion blur watching the footie and movies etc. It was great for gaming, but didn't enjoying watching the TV on it.

So, was looking at a plasma, but am a bit worried about image retention, especially when gaming. Any testimonials? Had looked at the Panasonic Viera 42" 720P TV.

I've been gaming on a plasma for a couple of years now and haven't noticed any problems with retention, you'll get a small amount if you play a game with static areas, but it soon goes once you change channel.

I thought image retention was a permanent thing Robbie? I wouldn't mind in the slightest if it stayed there for a few seconds, or minutes after changing channel.

retention = temporary
burn = permanent

after first few months i treat my tv like any tv. played ps3 Oblivion on it yesterday for a couple of hours - FINE no screen retention at all. If you choose a good model then you wont have any problems with screen retention or screen burn.

How's your TV for watching the footie Surfer? I found my LCD (Sammy LE40M87) had really hellish motion blur. Not a prob on the plasma?

We've had no problem with ours in around 3 years, can't really remember, but it's been a while. My grandad bought the last top of the range Pioneer before the current one and it burned in no time and he's really careful. I think his is a very limited problem though.

It's quite tricky to burn something these days, much much better than the ones that 'screen burn' became legend for.

Screen burn on a decent plasma is pretty much a thing of the past now. Most plasma's have settings specifically designed to prevent it.

I've had a 42" Hitachi plasma for over a year now, and there's no sign of burn at all.

I think the new Panasonic range is one of the best for performance-price going. Pioneer are closer to the Sony X3 series high end sets in terms of price.

very very good :D If you go up close (ie sit right in front of the tv) there is a little blur on the motion of the ball. I think you get used to it so dont really notice it.

Dont notice blur on the close-up shots: only on the panned out view.

I think CRT still wins in terms of no blur on MOTION/MOVEMENT at all but the still images of my plasma screen beat the CRT imo. Very very crisp and clear/clean. (talking about watching football here- ie the closeup shots).

As has been said panasonic, pioneer and some samsung (i would add) and you cant go wrong :)

Panasonic, Pioneer and Sony would be my recommendations. I have personal usage of Sony and Pioneer and they are great (Sony gives a better image IMO).

Isnt that down to Noise Reduction though? If you turn it off it doesn't blur anymore, does on my samsung anyway.

Could be that or the movie plus bug which would cause motion lag/stutter, as I have owned this set and didnt have the problems described unless movie plus was turned on (even if turned off in settings it would automatically turn itself on)

If you want the 'ultimate' movie machine, the Pioneer Kuro range (428/507) are undeniably the best performing displays out there..

However, all LCD's are not equal, and if response times are your thing, then you may want to look at other LCD's..
The Sharp XL2E range, and the Toshiba Z series have pretty excellent reports when it comes to ghosting and motion handling..

I intend to buy the 50" Pioneer 1080p plasma when the price reduces a bit, its currently not far from £3k, but its widely accepted to be the best HDTV money can buy (obviously under 3 grand).

I have a 40" Sony HD LCD at the moment, and its great for moving images, (40D3000), great for normal tv, but i really need the 50" to make me happy.
