Does anyone have a personal workshop/unit?

He actual said it was £19.5k all in, still a good price. £11k was just for the base.

With the price of concrete and other materials now, I wouldnt be surprised if that wouldnt cost you £30k nowadays.

I had a quote for a concrete base during covid for a garage with water and electric run to it (60m) during covid and it as £12k. I got it revised last month and now £19k sadly :(

I dread to think how much the shed will be now

No i should have explained better, it was 11k all in, the base was about 3 or 4k.

It will be more now though as that was in 2018 and steel is a lot more expensive now along with all other building materials.

If it helps i used cyclone steel buildings up in scotland for mine, i think i got 10+ companies to quote me in the end but they were the best price with what i actually wanted.

That was a bargain then!!!!! a concrete slab of that size would be closer to £10k alone now unless you are doing it all yourself

I have access right at the end of my back garden, good enough to get a digger in (on hire) to dig the foundations. The cement truck could pull up and offload straight into the foundations as well. Am hoping that will bring the price down! Maybe get a brickie in for the day of the pour, and a week later to lay the first few rows. DPC down and then get the reinforced slab poured. All food for thought.

I wish I had got mine done 2 years ago. Price of concrete has gone through the roof. Was quoted £65 plus vat per cubic metre back then and now its £128 plus vat!!!! Thats thats double the cost just for the concrete alone sadly.

I looked in to renting a unit with enough space for a lift and some cars and was getting close to £8k - 10k a year on rent alone. Then all the other costs of insurance, power and heating etc it just didn't make sense. Also, if the unit is far from home then with travel time and tinkering time your personal life at home can suffer.

I got quotes to build a steel garage at home like sovietspybob's back in early 2020 and for a 10mx9m garage it was £30k and I almost committed to it. Then world events happened and it's now more likely to cost £40k.

Wish I had a workshop, luckily I get to use the ramps at work on a Friday afternoon, but you do have to book well in advance and you have to finished by the end of the day. So not any good if I wanted to have a project car.

Unfortunately this seems to the be the way it's going, kinda expected I guess but still :p

I do have an alternative... I have a double garage but it's a bit awkward for a few reasons. Currently it's where I store my longterm 'project' car, otherwise known as the place I dump stuff on/in :/ but also it's a bit of an odd setup where half the garage is behind the house so it's got a single door offset to the left of the garage, and the roof height is too small for a lift. When I got the house I bought a set of dollies for the project car so I could get it in and then move it across but to work on any car requires the sides free really.

So I'm kinda thinking:
  • Find somewhere to store the project for say 12 months (not likely to do much on it in that time and gets me an idea if I actually use the garage as a workshop as regularly as I think I will :p
  • Replace the garage door so it's a bit better insulated/less spiders
  • Potentially get either quickjacks or maybe a small lift that'll fit (the latter may well require ripping up some of the existing concrete and re-laying a suitable pad though)

Then I guess see how much I use it on my existing cars (potentially if that goes well getting the project out of storage), if I use it a lot then maybe it's worth the outlay for a proper workshop with even more space/proper lift etc but if I barely use it then the cost is fairly minimal (and not really 'wasted' like renting a workshop for a year could be)

Be careful where you store your project. Previously my car was stored in an attached brick garage and was well protected. Now it's in a metal shed just big enough for it and the local mice have left evidence of their visits. I'm of the thinking that each year the condition of the car gets worse and the list of things to do just gets longer!

That kinda sucks, I think there's some high end storage places near-ish but that kinda seems overkill, got a friend of a friend who has some car storage (runs a race team so got a workshop and another unit for storage, stores the race cars over winter), I'd need to see the unit but that seems like a possible option... Hopefully no mice! :p

When i built my garage i was going for a 2 post lift, i think you can see the chalk marks in my pics before. but in the end i decided if i was getting a lift i'd go for one of those mid rise scissor lifts as while the access isn't as good as a 2 post you don't lose any space in the garage at all when it's not actively in use as you can just park over it and gives a lot more flexibility as you can move them around.

A local small garage have a high lift scissor one so i popped by and they let me have a poke around and i was surprised how good the access to everything still was with one.

This is the kind i was thinking of: Lift on ebay
