Does anyone have a SCSI setup

well i have bought in the past SCSI 15k drives bought for 80 quid (the pair) and SCSI adaptec new with ones years warranty for £84 these prices are including vat and including carraige and i have raided WD raptors and found them noisy and clunky and sorry scsi wins!!

As far as I am aware, Raptors are in fact basically 10k SCSI drives with a S-ATA interface bolted on...
dunno.gif

I've always found boot-up times are pretty poor using SCSI since the interface needs to initialise etc. I haven't worked with many SCSI systems, maybe it was just those in particular.

No SATA is different than SCSI as i have said SATA and IDE are one way data transfer whereas SCSI transmits data both ways up and down the cable at the same time. but i can agree with you on slow boot times but in my opinion a small price to pay,and i am sure western digital would love to here you say there Raptor drives are SCSI with a SATA interfaces LOL there are however new SAS drives in the pipe line Serial Attached SCSI which will then give the SATA interface a full duplex architecture therefore doubling throughput. then and only then will i take SATA seriously, but there really SCSI drives!

I think this topic about SCSI is my fault because reading the orginal post i have the title 'does anyone own a SCSI setup' Like DOH! sorry my bad as the Americanos would say!

I didn't say otherwise, I just said the drives themselves are effectively SCSI parts with S-ATA connectivity... which is nothing to do with the mechanical drive itself, simply the IC board attached.

I that was the case they would have just started to manufacture 15k drives which i am sure you have noticed there really arent any in production and the technology is different a 10k SATA drive like you say may spin at 10k but the board and interface are different. PLus your trying to imply SATA is the same as SCSI there just not.

Ive been using a U320 15k Atlas now for ages for my OS and Games. Its handy, as I can get into BF2 etc quicker than someone with a much better system than me. The drive and controller was essentially free tho, so I would never have bothered to buy such a setup.

Its much more clicky than a normal drive, you can really hear it accessing and loading stuff, and the fans on the slide in mount (its a SCA) get dusty quick and then start to make a noise.

I'm tempted to get a newer SCA drive now, maybe that really fast Fujitsu one, but I'll probably just keep my eyes open at work for one.

This drive is about 2 years old now and still beats the latest Raptors, so they certainly are good investments, and they arent really that expensive too.

just wanted to know cause i have and needed some help but there was little out there! i also would like to know if there is anyone out there who has upgraded there system or like me several times, and felt well rather not that impressed, like one time you had a system running really, really sweet and you upgraded. then you felt robbed! I had a system it was socket A 2.8 Athlon with 512 or 1gb ram and a scsi card like 80mb and a drive was 15k 18gb fujitsu and i always was impressed and just never really got that satisfaction again, maybe i am a way off on one please dont slate me if i am. But can anyone relate to this if you do please give me a big shout up!

Nothing touches SCSI for performance. One of my earlist build PC's a Dual Pentium 150 with ultra Wide Scsi on board, it was a beast of a system.

I moved from that to an AMD K2's with EIDE, mainly due to the costs of the SCSI setup, but it always felt like it was generally slower. With all the various upgrades to disks and new systems i've built, It's always felt like there's something lacking.

Even with a recent PC, (FX51 with Raid 0'd 74GB Raptors) as fast as it was, you can tell the difference between a SCSI solution and a SATA / EIDE one.

As soon as I find a decent PCI-e Raid SCSI controller, I'm going back to 15k SCSI Ownership.

SATA is like a decent 2.0 Litre Car, SCSI is the one with the Turbo. :D

I feel all warm and glowy inside LOL excellent, i am glad there are some people that get exactlly what i am saying, I draw the conclusion that we sometimes have to get to a point were we are content, contentment is a hard old thing to get......point to ponder....... but i will say for gaming i do understand the need to upgrade, but a word to the wise if we upgrade when there is no need i think we maybe are asking for a let down, I am now happy with my system and barring a bit of tweaking and a possible extra 1gb of ram i hope not to upgrade for a long time...well i might upgrade....dum de dum de dum and the rat race of life, goes on................
