Hey all,

Does anyone have the Netgear R7000 "nighthawk"? I want a new router, but my main choice (the Asus RT-AC86U) only comes in a stupid freestanding design and I need one that will sit on a 19" rack shelf. Not interested in the RT-AC66U.

Real world experiences of ownership would be great :)

The R7000 is a decent enough router, but I don't have USB drives connected to my routers or use VPNs for example. So the basic, routing, features are good but my biggest complaint with it is that whenever you change something, generally it drops the the PPP session whilst the change is being applied. Not sure if it's a full reboot, but the amount of time it takes it does feel like it.

The wifi range for both 2.4 and 5Ghz channels is good; slightly stronger than the RT-AC68U in my environment but of course this is wireless and everyone will have different experience.

Why are you ruling out the AC66U? Unless you have 3x3 5Ghz AC adapters/cards you're not going to see the full speeds of the R7000 or AC-68U anyway, so dropping down to the AC66U may not be such an issue and should be cheaper.

I suppose it's just a case that the AC66U is only £30 cheaper, so for that little bit extra its "more" futureproof.

The AC87U looks horrendous :p
