Does anyone here still use a single core pc?

Yup my home pc is a lovely 8 years old now running a Shuttle with a P4 Northwood clocked to a whopping 3.something. In it's life it's had it's gfx card updated twice, a bit more ram thrown in and the disks changed.

Still runs day to day stuff fine, boots up and shuts down quickly, runs all the office stuff I need. Last 'new' game I played on it was MW2 though, don't think it'd cope with much else newer.

But do still use it for gaming now and then with TF2, quite partial to a quick go on generals now and again as well.

I could do with a new one though :)

And the netbook is also single core.

Athlon 64 3800 socket 939 here :) - going to sandy bridge once prices sort themselves out. I overclocked it last week for the first time whilst bored.

I got a bunch of old CPUs in a box but nothing single core is still used. I had an A64 3200+ back when it was the 2nd best cpu apart from the FX51. Had that from 2003ish-2005ish then i got an opteron 170 and havent used a single core since.

Just about to retire my 10 year old Pentium 4 3.4GHz based system with a AGP Radeon HD 3850 as I've gotten to the stage that I can't play new games on it any longer, especially when you have a 24" monitor and dream of playing games in their native resolution of 1920x1200. It's served me well and considering I'm a system builder I should have done this long ago but as it ran everything I asked of it I never saw the need. Going to build an i5 or i7 system in the new few weeks and looking forward to it. At the same time I'll be sad taking apart the old P4 system but I've just had a look on eBay and theres components like my Asus P4P800-E Deluxe motherboard that are still selling for a fair price so will get them all up for auction :)

Pretty much same here - went from XP3200+ to 754 SKT 3400 then 939 SKT 3700, FX 57

SKT 939 FX 60 was my 1st and only dual core.....went to a Q6600 (G0) after that. Now on a 970.

Still have a P4E 3.0GHz and a 700MHz duron kicking around somewhere. The only single core I still use is an Atom 1.6GHz in my ION netbook.

Interesting thread TBH.....until I started listing my old CPU's here, it was easy to forget how long multicore chips have been with us.

I recently tried using Sempron 3400+, or something equally pathetic with Windows 7... Even with a SSD the experience was absolutely terrible. Just sticking a £30 dual core Athlon in that rig resulted in an amazing change.

A socket 939 3700+ was the last single cored CPU I had in my main system, that went in 2008.

The last single core I used in my own rig, was an opteron 144 which overclocked very nicely to 2.8ghz with fast ram.

But the best single core machine I ever made used that last generation of AMD64 4000+ chips. The stepping was freaky and it overclocked to 3.2 ghz almost out of the box. Combining that with a 8800gt and 2 gigs of ram, it actually played everything on the market at the time reasonably well (at least until Crysis came along).

Oh, and my sig is way out of date. But that was a nice rig too when I made it.

im using one still :)

I think I gave mine to a friend. Never pushed it to it's limits, but as I say even on stock cooling and a very small voltage bump it went up to 3.1 something. After putting a Scyth Ninja on it and giving it a more manly voltage bump it got to 3.3ghz or so. There was more play in the ram ratio and timings, but I only spent a few hours testing it and I underclocked it back to something more pedestrian before giving it away.
