Does anyone here use Apple Pay for contactless payments around the UK?

Had it fail a few times, mostly on TFL turnstiles which is stupidly annoying at peak times, so have reverted back to a physical wallet and cards. It's been relegated to reward cards (that display a barcode) only now.

Haven't had much luck with Google either so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The only time Google pay failed me, and even then it eventually went through after a few tries, was when I did need some cash so I had put my card in the back of my phone case a few days before.

It wasn't until I got home after that I remembered about my card being there, the system had been confused by my phone and card both trying to pay at the same time.

Only place I have had an issue is mid air on a budget airline. They take cards for food and drinks but not Apple pay. Presume there is some way to game the system while out of cellular service. Meanwhile its ok for them to charge $6 for a terrible cup of coffee.
The supermarket next to work is in a basement and there is no phone signal, apple pay works fine and I usually get a secondary notification when I'm back in service.

Haven’t used cash for years. Think since the Nexus 6P days is when I began using contactless. For daily TFL I use an Oyster card still because I they’re faster through the gates.

The only time I’ve had issues was in Manhattan in 2019. They were rather behind the times regarding contactless.

Yes, there is a way to 'game the system'.

Some airlines take Apple Pay, British Airways (a budget airline with full service airline pricing) and Ryanair have both let me buy coffee using Apple Pay recently.

My bank can be quite funny sometimes with not authorising payment. Tried to use it in the Apple shop to buy the Mrs an iPhone and it didn't work. I've had some other reasonably expensive purchases not authorised to (Halifax/Bank of Scotland).

I haven't taken my wallet out with me in years since I started using Apple Pay with my phone... So handy doing a full food shop, ordering takeaways etc and tapping my phone - or paying for items online when they accept Apple Pay is handy as hell too.

I only take my wallet with me if we're going away or abroad just incase I need it. But even my last few holidays abroad, card payments were taken everywhere and it even worked on the flights 'offline' perfectly. Didn't need my physical bank cards ever.

Makes life a whole lot easier :)

Quick question guys,

If I have my iPhone out of reach and my watch is using cellular, can I still use Apple Pay on the watch without the phone in the vicinity?

Yes, you don’t even need cellular on the watch as the details are stored on the watch itself and the authentication is done by the card reader.
