Does anyone know how test PSU with a (cheap) multimeter

My suspect is PSU Hiper 580w type-r. I have a multimeter and was wondering if anyone could tell me how to test it. Especially what settings to dial into it. I realise this would be quite annoying to reply to, but what a public service you'd be doing!

Plug the 24 and 8pin connectors into your mobo so the PSU thinks it's connected and will start. Get your PSU manual and it will say what the output should be on each connector on your PSU. I can't remember which setting it should be on the multimeter but one of the volt ones.

You'll need a 2 inch piece of insulated wire in addition to your multimeter to test some rails but you need to know exactly what your doing. It's pretty straight forward but i certainly wouldn't try explaining it over a forum just incase you mis-understand any of the info.

If you do a google search along the lines of your thread title you should find some web sites that give detailed information and pics to illustrate what you need to do.

Make sure you cross reference the information from one site with another similar site just incase your first hit is a site talking b*ll*x.

Might be over your budget, but if not haw about this...

EDIT: Doh! Didnt really think this would be an OCUK competitor, sorry, linky no worky

Set the meter to 20 VDC. Touch black lead to the black (ground) wire. Touch the red lead to each voltage, then read a number.

Each color wire is typically the same voltage. So you measure any one of (for example) purple, orange, red, and yellow wires.

Measuring a power supply without a maximum load says almost nothing useful. Best time to measure a power supply is when connected to its maximum load (ie a computer). That load makes it possible for a meter to see power supply defects.

Also useful are voltages on the various signal wires that communicate with the power supply controller (ie green and gray). But again. Only when connected to a load: the controller.
