Was just wondering whether anyone uses these pre-prepared folders in Windows?

I've always just had my own folders on the desktop for music, documents, pictures etc.

Nope - most of that kind of stuff lives on my NAS so I can get to it easily from any PC. Even before I had the NAS they mostly lived in their own folder structures on the 2nd HDD.

All I really use my docs for is to dump files for easy access i.e. I'll extract an archive to there before I do anything else with it.

Yes, religiously.

I have My Docs, My Pics, My Vids, and My Music pointed to directories on my NAS.

I redirect the Documents (which doesn't really hold much in the way of documents) and Downloads folders, but can't say I've ever used the Pictures, Videos or Music folders.

For media, I tend to have specialised folders set up, and it would be impossible to incorporate into the default Windows system.

documents yes, although only for 'quick saves', main work is on a 'work drive'. Music, pictures and video aren't used although I do make use of the 'libraries' feature and link up the libraries to my media storage etc.

They're all linked to separate folders on another drive, along with the rest of the 'user' folder.

I regret putting my music collection into the My Music folder.

A Windows 7 beta build trashed the meta data, I've got countless folders with only half filled tags because of it.

Didn't notice it was a problem for a while either so all my backups of it also had the issue.

I will get round to fixing them one day. Now I give myself read-only access to my media files.

edit. 5 years ago this happened to me; damn I'm lazy :p

i did, but then lazyness means i have half a million folders in there spawned by various games. cant delete them and cba moving them, so i just have a 'tidy' documents area and a shortcut.

kind of hoping to move to cloud or nas in the future though

yes i do use them. i'm quite anal about how my files are sorted so everything is where it's supposed to be. they are all re-directed to another drive though. nothing is stored on my windows partition,

Oh yes, I didn't think of that problem, programs that create their own folders there. :(

tell me about it, just been reinstalling and realised just how many 'junk' folders I get given in 'my documents', then there's more in the 'public documents' too.... I'd hate to think what would happen if I used this pc for games too

I gained 17 folders, yes 17, in my documents that could have easily been put into 3 folders (autodesk, adobe and microsoft) with sub directories, 1 program gave me 4 folders all on it's own and that's excluding the ones I put into a different drive location during install and the 4 (this time with sub directories) in public my documents

It actually made me 'reorganise' my layout of documents this time, I just couldn't find the folders where my work was actually being kept lol

They point to my storage drive and my music/tv shows/documents all go in their correct folder.
