Does leaving MSN running while you game have a performance impact?
If you can close it...close it.
Why leave it open unless you need to? It's using resources (bandwidth and RAM mostly) no matter how small an amount (a stupid amount of RAM for such a crappy program now you mention it).
I've had msn send me to desktop a few times no biggy just annoying.
Occasionally when a message appears it causes a slight slowdown, which works fine for me as that way I know there is a message.

What cpu do you have? A pentium 3?
That shouldn't really happen on any modern system...
because when someone 1st chats to you whilst your appearing offline the message come in front of everything else so it closes down the game
