Does rendering 10 bit instead of 8 affect framerate in games?

It might seem an obvious question, but there is a lot of debate about this, on other forums, and although there's a theory that it does impose a greater load, it isn't on the GPU and framerate isn't affected. Others say that it is, but there doesn't seem to have been any definitive tests done.

I've also come across a lot of comments which claim that HDR is a fancy name for 10 bit and that the two are actually one & the same, is this true?

Depends on setup in most cases the GPU will still be processing 8bit even if outputting to 10bit - if you are truly dealing with 10bit end to end there is potential for some slowdown.

The current flavour of HDR is more about boosting the physical contrast to make whites very bright and blacks very dark in appearance - you can get older true 10bit monitors that won't appear so vivid as the current flavour of "HDR". Though stuff like FALD is kind of fail IMO.
