Does something need to be done about dogs?

Well it's not, it's a comparison between things that are (unfortunately) largely essential for modern living vs ones that aren't.
Actually the benefits dogs provide to millions of people far outweigh the negatives just like cars. When somebody takes a stance of 'save the kids' you have to expect replies like this.

You are confusing me and making yourself look silly.
I'm just highlighting the ridiculous nature of blanket bans.

Dogs are not (largely) essential. The benefits are your opinion. Words are important.

It's not opinion, it is fact backed up by science.

Also, if you want to start blanket banning non essential things that have the potential to cause harm we won't have much left.

Show me the benefits of a dog that's just torn a young child's legs off.
Back to silly emotional arguments. Nobody is saying dogs can't cause harm but the benefits far outweigh that. Just like your car argument, for that matter show me the benefits of a car that's just killed a child.

Dogs are not essential to the workings of everyday life, outside of guide dogs and a few other areas which I don't have problem with.

Just cull all dogs that are pets only, working dogs have a reason to be around I get that.

Lol just cull all dogs. Yeah. Madman.

At least you now admit the benefits do exist :p

And those benefits are the opinion of the owners. Not scientific facts. You seem to complain about people being emotive and yet that is literally your only argument for mass ownership of dogs. You can't have it both ways.

As I said it's not opinion it is scientific fact as many peer reviewed papers would tell you. Amazing how ones hatred of dogs can cloud their judgment.

Amazing how ones hatred of common sense allows them to say that you can't get rid of dogs because it's purely emotive whilst the only reason to keep them is...emotions

not sure i follow??

You argument for allowing people to keep dogs is that they provide joy for millions of people.

Knocking one off brings joy to pretty much every bloke. Yet we can't just walk around in public doing it, can we?

This is what I was gonna say, spot on. Emotions is the only thing keeping pet dogs around, shoot them all I say!

The benefits of dog ownership are not just emotional, not sure why you keep saying that. Let's face it a blanket ban of dogs is never going to happen so you'll just have to lump it.

That doesn't make it a unreasonable solution as you stated above earlier. It absolutely is a solution to the problem I'm afraid
