Does the amd 965/955/945 require ddr3 ram?

Depends if you have an AM2+ (DDR2) or AM3 (DDR3) motherboard. Those CPUs can work on either, just check the compatibility lists on the motherboard manufacturers websites.

the motherboard is asrock n68-s. it takes ddr2

this is what it says on the website

From that cpu support list it looks like your motherboard can take the 945 but not the 955 or 965.

Hey Shakeel, are you confused about the AM3 processors themselves? . . . . AM3 chips have "both" a DDR2 & DDR3 memory controller built in so people have the choice of plugging them into either a DDR2 (AM2+) board or a DDR3 (AM3) board . . .

• AM3 chip & AM2+ mobo is good
• AM3 chip & AM3 mobo is good

I had a stash of DDR2 myself and didn't think the gain from DDR3 was "compelling" so bought an AM2+ mobo to go with a AM3 chip + DDR2

na thanx wayne. i guess i just wnated to know can i use ddr2 on that board. but i used an athlon 2 x2 and x4 am3 chips with ddr2 so i gues it should be fine
