I was wondering what the advantages of bios updates are and whether they happen normally with other updates.

Is it something I need to or should do?

Where can I find bios updates and what are the risks, sorry for all the questions.

thanks

gotta be done manually, they're mainly or bug fixes and new cpu support. They rarely contain new features, and if the flashing process goes wrong, you could end up with a dead board. There are recovey procedures, but they dont work every time. They didnt for me.
basically, if it works, dont fix it.

if you're desperate to update it, you can either flash the BIOS via a program in windows (i personally have never had a problem doing it this way, but most people advise against it), or you can make a bootable floppy/memory stick, put a copy of the new bios on there and boot off that.

well I have no actuall reason to flash the bios right now I thought it may be worth doing for some reason but the potential risk outweighs the benefits.

Much appreciated.

An example of need is my board is a lga1366. As you probably know the 980X i7 has been released, a processor with 6 cores, which requires a lga 1366 slot.

My board now needs a bios upgrade to use this processor if i want it..

At the moment it's useless me flashing, but if / when i get a 980x ill need to flash it, at a possible risk.
