Does the Connect X1800XT need a seperate power plug?

Does the above card need a power plug plugged into it (or does it draw its power from the PCI-X slot?), i only ask as i havent got any spare on my system and have ordered one.

PCI-X??? Urm you mean PCI-E(express) right? If so yeah you need an a 6pin power connector. You not got 2 molex spare then? Cos you can use those using an adaptor. You can also get dedicated power supplies that only provide power to graphics cards that need it.

If you have 1 spare molex u can use the adaptor that comes in the box,if u have no spare molex i suggest you get a 2 way splitter for one of your molex that is in use

Hmm I was looking at the Akasa website and saw this

That one does. The one in the box takes a single molex plug from the PSU and has a pass-through molex for another device.

That ones the same, the other molex is for powering something else, like a case fan etc... or using an extender to reach a HD, do not connect 2x as your sending power from the PSU back onto itself, which would be very risky.

Someone on here has already been lucky as they connected 2x, it didn't work, and they were lucky not to blow their PSU or something by trying to send the power back onto itself.

Just had a look at the cable that came with my Connect3D X1800 XT and it's a pass-through, not a double input, so it has male molex plus female molex. So you don't need a spare molex to power the card, you can use one that powers a drive. It's probably not a good idea to use it like that, but you may as well try it and see if it works before shelling out on a new PSU.

It does use a stonking 103W under load so make sure you have a good quality branded (not Q-Tec) 350W+ PSU (400W to be safe).

Its all up and running and takes up about 3 slots on me machine lol, i got it cnnected to power using adaptor and its fine, i havent a clue what psu i have as its a pre built machine, seems fine though.

Ran through 05 and a session on quake 4 so seems fine, what kind of rig do you need to run quake 4 on ultra settings? a 512 meg card?

I think it'll run on a 256mb card ok if you have 2gb ram or more. I tried it with my X1800XT and it was unplayable as it kept reading from the hard drive.
