does the PS3 support DTS HD Master Audio

Could you compare two titles that are on both formats and give thoughts on the 6000kbs VS 3000Kbs. This would have to be a Dolby Title as ALL DTS soundtracks will revert to the same 1500kbs on current hardware for both formats, (see chart). Im interested if Dolby Titles have more noticable differences compared with HD-DVD & Blu Ray 1500kbs DTS Vs HD-DVD Dolby 3000kbs - Blu Ray Dolby 4600kbs & 6000kbs.
Anyone lost yet?

I suppose the only problem here is finding such a title for true comparison and the other problem being many Blu Ray titles are 4600kbs ? not the 6000kbs maximium.

Possible Factors
The other issue is the factors of different players outputting the sound better than others SN ratios? Then theirs the actual soundtrack quality could depend as much on how it was edited/transformed/handled in the mastering stages and could be reason why possibly not so much difference is heard at all particulary between HD DVD & Blu Ray comparisons.

I already have Happy feet on HD-DVd, and believe BR edition to be "better" (maybe someone can confirm or deny - even though this is probably a personal thing) not sure if I want to go out and buy any more "copies" I already have but will do for one as I think it will be interesting (MovieTyme are stating its only 5.1EX on BR, and "jersey" arent stating what sound - so maybe this isnt a good choice of title.

Happy to do a comparison if someone mentions a suitable title - even if I have to buy both HD-DVd and BR if I dont already have either

Think the bold is really crucial to my mind, some soundtracks just "natually" sound less impressive due to the original ~design~ for the film. No fault of the media/ transfer.

Anyway - any suggestions on what film to compare anyone and I will willingly do the best I can :D

Thanks for the advise regarding DTS :D

Please bare in mind everyone that my kit isnt the best by any means:

32" Sammy HDTV (hoping to upgrade to 46" 1080p) from 18 months ago
Toshiba HD-E1
PS3
Pioneer AX4SiS (yes the one with the bass level problems from HD sources)
4 * Acoustic Energy bookshelf speakers + AE centre channel

The hd-dvd version of happy feet has a dolby true hd track and the blueray version which i have has a dolby digital ex track the hd-dvd version should sound better and reviews suggest it does so i dont see how the blueray version is better.

I have Ghost rider on blueray which has a dolby truehd track which has a Variable bitrate of between 2400kbs/4000kbs at 48kHz/20-bit and it also has a uncompressed pcm 5.1 track which has a constant bitrate of 4600kbs at 48kHz/16-bit.

I can hear no difference between the two tracks apart from the pcm track sounding a bit louder.

is there anyone tryed the new onkyo amps with theses new formats

There are people with the new onkyo amps and they still cant use the amps onboard dts-hd/true-hd decoders because there are no players yet that can pass the bitstream to them, the encoding is done inside the players and passed through the hdmi as pcm you are still listening to the dolby-true-hd its just that it says pcm on the amp and not dts-hd/true-hd.

As mentioned earlier Panasonics Player i think is one of the first more affordable players in the UK that IS compatible.

The Pioneer VSX-LX50 THX AV amp is Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding equipped and should now be available in the UK for approx £650-£700

Certainly an option to consider against the Onkyo for people like James or other early adopters of the format.

Oh sorry Frank forgot to reply to your earlier post...

I quite like HIGH DEF DIGEST
300 Is the newest upcoming dual format title and they review both

HD-DVD Version
&
BLU RAY Version

As for the audio ....
"Warner has supplied both next-gen editions with matching Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround tracks (48kHz/16-bit), but this Blu-ray is also graced with an additional PCM 5.1 surround option (48kHz/16-bit/6.9mbps). Right upfront, the PCM sounded a bit louder, but after some level matching, a direct A/B comparison of several scenes revealed only slight differences. Although I'm sure this disc will stir up the whole TrueHD vs PCM debate, either way you slice it, the action scenes in '300' deliver the kind of demo-worthy audio that should be pure nirvana for any home theater enthusiast."

I was considering this replacement but for the price only two HDMI inputs is pretty lousy imo (not to mention on a few sites unconfirmed -drat drunk too much - converts to higher resolution - sorrry guys) otherwise I would condider it - at the moment only Onkyo 805/875 does what I need (personally)

I can understand reviews of soundtracks and comparisons stating they find little difference with say HD DVD @ 3000kbs and Blu Ray PCM @4300 but surely titles (if any) that offer 6800kbs on Blu Ray's PCM should sound noticably better not just a little better, thats twice the bandwidth possibly on a Blu Ray soundtrack to a HD-DVD soundtrack.

I still cant quite understand how HiDef audio can be branded so specifically when bit rates can vary from 3000kbs right upto 24000kbs available on DTS MA from Blu Ray.

The thing is PCM for me is quite clearly a lot better than DVD because of the 10x and more amount of bandwidth available. DTS MA with upto 24000kbs even compared with other PCM soundtracks @4300 or 6800kbs should sound 1/2 as good again, but it doesnt seem to be the case.

Has anyone read reviews on a full DTS MA system using a bit for bit soundtrack? Im getting a feeling anything over 4300kbs PCM means its harder to notice the improvements?

Thoughts?

It could well be that currently its a case of ever decreasing increments the higher the bitrate, and depending on the system as a whole you have with amp and speakers and cabling all adding/taking away/changing the soundtrack along the way the increments getting lost.

I had a look for 300 on either format and couldnt find it - but found places with Blood Diamond and Flags of Our Fathers on both formats - so personally think FooF may be a better tester (and I seem to recall the BR having DTS MA and LPCM on the same disc)
