Does the Queen do anything?

Yes, but would Windsor or Buckingham Palace be such a draw without the Queen or the Queen's Guard? No. The royal family are the draw. People don't goto Buckingham expecting to definately see the Queen.

So whats with those guards? I know they are the royal guards and arnt allowed to move but what if someone touches them? can they give them a good ol fashin flogging :p

Be that as it may though I still reckon a large part of the draw are the buildings and architecture. Mainly because you don't find that kind of thing in the States etc.

I dunno tbh. They're only human though :p
I know that their main priority is to protect the Queen. A whole regiment seems a bit excessive though, but with all the tension in today's world I wouldb't be surprised if someone made an attempt to do something to her. If such a thing did happen though, I would feel quite annoyed to say the least. I don't care much for the royal family but it's like attacking your nationality and patriotism takes over... if you follow.

In a word, yes. As I understand it they are normally well trained and usually armed so if you [rhymes with] *muck* with them you might get shot :D

Unlikely though, but if you prod them they will diplomatically tell you to get lost in true forces speak :p

She does a lot. She brings in vast amounts of revanue though tourism, She does a hell of a lot of diplomatic and other meetings and is well respected around the world. oh and has a few powers in parliment..

We need her. When you relisea what she does and the money she brings in, its well worth us having a queen.

Well the civil war and the beheading of Charles 1st. We had 10 years of totalitarian rule then the idiot died and we became a democracy again.

The monarchy is part of who we as a country are. For the people who complain about how much money they cost us we have the fact having a royal family brings in a lot more money than we spend on upkeep.

I for one would not want to be king in this time, to have your life scrutenised from the day you are born by the media and then having to spend the rest of your life talking to some random people every day would drive me mad.

PS. "The man whos name shall not be mentioned" also banned mince pies and christmas.

Costs around 79p per head per year iirc.

Oh, and can someone explain how the taxpayers pay for the royal art collection? How can you pay for a painting to exist?

paintings need to be restored quite often, otherwise they sorta break.

to the person who said that the queen can dissolve Parliament when things go "boobs skyward" why hasn't she done so now? the country is currently run by a man with Liar in his name, and Jabba the Hutts' brother. who ate all the pies.

taxpayers will understand what i mean. 41%...

the household receives c £35m/yr and the treasury gets the receipts fromt eh crown estates of c £170m/yr, not a bad deal.

The 'huge' amount of art etc is held for the nation and not owned personally by the queen i.e. she would not be sell to sell it

FYI Margaret Beckett spent more on the royal flight than the queen in 04

Tourism revenue is high and it is the 2/3rd largest employer

The head of state function is required and if not the neutral and relatively powerless and respected Queen, then what? President Tony/Prescott?

As a contrast the cost of the Scot parliament building would cover the royal costs for c15-20years (not including any mnt cost for said parliament), so not bad value really

Agreed, but that's true of any art collection. My badly-phrased question was meant to ask what's the difference in maintenance between the royal collection and any other collection owned by the nation in a national gallary?

well thats a simple one.

In a public gallery the public get to see it

In there collection, its private, the public do not get to see it, some visiting heads of state may get to see some of it. but "jo public" does not.

BUT, we pay to have it restored dont we. Kind of a little unfair you have to admit
