Does the Queen do anything?

Nice post Mr Smallhausen.

Bring back the British Empire, that's what I say. We need to start taking back what's ours!

Or what we stole from the rightful owners

Personally I think the Royal Family are great.

She has lots of power through the Royal Prerogative though she doesn’t exercise them without permission from the PM for rear of losing her job, or worse her head :p She keeps these powers like the power to go to war because it's convenient for a government if they need to do something quickly. It allows them to go to war without a parliamentary vote for instance. If the woman from Buckingham Palace says yes we can blow up any one we want.

Pfft, when she visited other countries that was a symbol of this country, its a dam shame that it was retired. Mr Tony Blair didn't like it, so he stopped it.

She also pays taxes like we do, thats why Windsor Castle is open to the public, etc.

You think she doesn't do anything? Well how about you actually research before you think? She probably works harder than you do

Nah, harder than you though.

And Im well aware of things she does.

werlllll....some people like his music and I spose his concerts are always packed and probably does some charity stuff but he is not my cup of tea really...

so I spose I would have to answer yes - he does do something....

we are talkin' bout Elton John right?

What with? Bad language and a few outdated weapon systems? The only decent stuff we have is perhaps on loan from the US and we cannot use it without Bush say so...

She might "might" do something, but I just think she's a tax burden, but at least she does bring in the tourists... Whatever she is doing, she isn’t doing enough, as last I checked the UK was a dump, and Tony B-Lair was still taking orders from Gordon Brown Nose.

*Sarcastic mode off*

Generally she spends most of her time reading parliamentary papers, her job is basically to know what the bloody hell is going on in parliament, she does a vast amount of work and knows more about what is goning on in parliament tham many Mp's as she takes a more general view.

She is there as an advisor basically, she knows the political process inside out and is a highly astute woman, do yo think she would be one of the few if not only people that could and would tell thatcher that she was being a muppet at times, and Thatcher would listen, do you think that she would have had the enormous amount of respect for the Queen had she been an idiot ?

The whole point of the whole system of government is to keep some kind of balance, to stop any government going too far, and this it does very wel, both the lords and the queen are naturally conservative and generally keep any government in check, it is open to abuse occasionally by the government in that they can use the Parliament act to force things through but only once per parliament, or as thatcher did they can stack the lords and bring out the backwoodsmen who are a bit shall we say "old school" and ultra conservative verging on extreem right.

Also the royal family bring another important thing to Politics, they are diplomats who are outside the government. take the US for example a lot of other countries do not like their governments policies at all, but in diplomatic circles they have to deal with smeone directly involved in the government of the day, which does hinder diplomatic relationships, now with the Royals they are seperate and many countries who do not like blairs governments policies or Thatchers before him are still able to deal with the queen because she is not a part of that directly. It offers a constant link betwee Britain and other countries even when governments change s they may not like the next Pm but will still maintain good relationships because the queen is a constant diplomat, and doesn't change no matter who is in power.

As for the queens power, in theory she still has absolute power, she could dissolve parliament on a whim, and if she had the support of certain elements in the country then Parliament could do little to stop it, if anyone saw the documentary a while ago abou Wilsons time in power and how certain parts of the military and intelligence services were actually planning a coup which would have put the Queen in charge, so it's still possible with the right support to have an absolute monarchy in this country, but it will never happen.

^^ It wasn't the Queen they were going to put in charge, it was, afiak, her brother or another male relative.

A fair enough, was difficult to follow as i thought it was although interesting very poorly done, the dramatisation bit's just broke it up and disjointed it.
