Am thinking of buying a Quest 2 and am not sure if you Plug it into the USB-C on my GPU or into one my motherboard USB-C sockets or if you can just plug it in to any of them

I don't have one in my GPU, but I do on the motherboard, I use the motherboard one and it works fine (been a while since I've used it to game though).

It should work on the GPU USB C. Some people have found it's more reliable, but your mileage may vary.
Personally I plug mine into a front panel USB-C as it's easier to get to, and allows me to make full use of the cable length.

If possible use the one on your Motherboard. In most cases it will be better.

But, to answer your question, yes, you can plug the USB C cable from the Quest 2 into any of them.

I use the one on my RTX 2080 because it gives a faster speed than the MB USB 3, keeps the quest 2 charged over the official link cable and is more stable.

In my experiance it depends.
The virtuallink port is supposed to be specced for a minimum of 10ghz and 15w, I'm guessing 5v 3A. The one on my strix 2080ti will charge the quest 2 while playing using the official link cable. I imagine it would with any decent usb 3 c cable.
Using the front panel usb c or rear usb c on my newer pc works fine but the charge slowly runs down with the link cable. I've discovered a bios option which may up the power limit but not tested it yet.
Anker 2 meter usb a to c cable works fine on either pc, charge runs down slowly. Anker 3m A to C cable is flakey on all ports on old pc and some ports on new pc.

It will work in the GPU’s usb c port.

But... if you’re really hammering the GPU then you may experience usb disconnects. From my experience it’s much better to use your motherboards port.

Hi I have just asked for advice in another thread then seen this one - can anyone help,

I have just been bought a gaming laptop - MSI GF65 RTX 3060 144 Hz.

Being a newbie to VR I bought a Rift S headset. It will not connect to the laptop as it has a HDMI port coming from the GPU.

The laptop has 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 type A connectors
2 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 type C connectors
1 audio jack mic in / out
1 HDMI 4K 60Hz
1 RJ 45 port

Can anyone tell me which VR headset I can actually connect to this laptop ? there is no other connector on the GPU that I can see other than a HDMI .... I m not sure where this RTX 3060 card has links be it the USB C connectors etc....

I can swop the Rift S for the Oculus Quest 2 easily no cost - the question I have is whether or not I can simply plug the Quest 2 into any other available connection on the laptop ...

I cannot understand as my knowledge is not great were the DCS flight sim images will appear in Quest but not work in the RIFT S ... ?? seems mad the latest cards dont have Virtual link but I would have thought that the RTX would be easy to access if you see what I mean .... As it stands if I cannot use HDMI to connect a headset the laptop is useless for VR - Advice appreciated thanks ... :-)

Quest 2 plugs into usb a or usb c so yes you can use it. It also works standalone which is a bonus.

You Will need to buy a suitable cable. Or purchase virtual desktop through oculus and use it wirelessly through your laptop.
