I'm basically trying to build a 2nd pc as cheaply as i can that'll still be quite a good pc. My requirements are that its reasonably high end and very quiet.

I'm thinking..

E5200 cpu
corsair 650watt psu (heard these are pretty quiet)
Gigabyte DS3 p31 mobbo
standard 800hz ram, prolly 2 gig of ddr2 geil for £30 or so.
second hand 8800gt for hopefully about £60.

This to me sounds a good plan and i'd hope to get 3.6ghz or so out of the E5200, will this ram be sufficient or should i be pushing a bit higher? also, are the aftermarket cpu coolers worth the money or should i stay with the stock one and save the £20 or so ?

Thanks...i think i'm on the right track but i'd like to know for def:)

Hiya mate. Ive got pretty much the same build as you and running at 3.5ghz.

What id reccomend you change :

Get a 400W / 500W cheaper psu. Leave the money for a P35 DS3L (if you can find any in stock) if you do end up going for a P31 DS3L, do NOT buy it off amazon from a seller named RUSMART. He sent out a S3G instead. Ive kept it but realise its 9 pounds less than the ds3l.

Anyway, get a better mobo and get some good air cooling and you should be sorted mate :)

If you have any probz o/cing etc just gimme a PM.

Thanks very much for the help:) I think i'll take your advice on the mobbo but the only place i could find it, i think it was £70..vs £45 of the one i said..which is what made me wonder if it was worth it. Reason i'm edging towards the corsair is that they're just so so quiet i hear. Anyone know any cheaper ones that are also extremely quiet?

Anyone else too? :p

650w Is very overkill for that rig. Why not get a Corsair VX 450 instead? The Gigabyte P31 DS3L is a excellent board and should get your E5200 to 3.4-3.6Ghz. I would add a Freezer 7 Pro to your list though. It really is worth the money. The new stock cooler for the E5200 is a puny thing.

glad i found this thread, you have answered my question too :)

I was worried the P31 might not be up to big OC's with the E5200 chip. but 3.6ghz will do me fine, already have a Freezer 7 sat waiting to run with it.....so happy days

Which board, same as his? The Gigabyte P31 DS3L is a fantastic board if thats the one. Probably the best budget combo you can get with a E5200.
