Ive noticed serveral times in the past few months on both our home pc's and on a few customers pcs that randomly, and apparently for no reason when using internet explorer it will freeze ( but not hang ) and thrash the hard disk for a good few minutes then just carry on as if nothing happened. This is on a fast well maintained dual core pc with 2gb ram and on our pc upstairs, an old p4 2gz with 1gb ram. Both running xp pro and both fully patched and spyware/virus free. Both run kaspersky but ive seen this on pcs that have no av at all.

Remember ie doest hang or come up with ( not responding ) it simply shows the eggtimer and thrashes the HDD for a few mins then carries on working. It can happen totally randomly, meaning it can happen while browsing after 5 mins or after 5 hours... it doent seem to have anything to do with free disk space or swap files.. all the pcs have loads of spare and no crud running in the task bar.

Its a very random occurance and its not done it on my pc a few weeks now, but its just done it on the pc upstairs and its got me wondering if its something people have seen before.
