External WD My Book 500GB.

Plug the power in. No blue light comes on. You hear the hard drive spin for about 2-3 seconds then the thing just shuts off.

Was working fine earlier, has not been dropped/damaged but has completely stopped working.

Anything I can do?

Cheers

You could take out the drive from the caddy and run it in your main system? or in another caddy?
Could be caddy thats dead rather than the drive..

Good luck mate :/
If ya can hear clicking its probably dead :(

Cheers

Just throwing in my 2 bits. My external drive would do this sometimes but as im running OSX i opened up disk utility and just ' mounted ' ( ;) ) the drive and all was well. If you are on windows im sure there is something like that for you. Otherwise it could just be buggered

Might be dead, might not be. Does it show up in disk management? Right click my computer, manage, disk management. If it's not there you're in trouble.

Boot from gparted livecd. If this doesn't see it either the disk or the enclosure is dead, and I second taking it out of the enclosure to find out which it is. Rma is probably a safer option.
