Does this sound like a PSU fault?

I've started getting a few faults from my PC and I'm thinking it may be power supply related.

The errors are:

- Intermittant failure to boot, no monitor output and no beeps
- A two tone siren while in windows that will stop eventually
- Onboard NIC failing to detect a network for no reason

A quick google suggests that beep code is overheating or voltage related. I have checked the CPU temperature and that seems quite normal to me, fans are working without issue.

The powersupply is probably 8 years old now, but most of the other hardware is a little newer (Abit AB9 Pro, Core 2 Duo E6600, 4GB RAM).

Is it worth changing the powersupply as a first step? If so, what is the best replacement to go with? I don't really use the PC for anything heavy at all these days so it just needs to be vaguely futureproof and quiet really.
 
Try removing the dvd drive and all extra pci add on cards, including the graphics card (if you have onboard available to use) and just use 1 modual of ram mate.

If it is still acting the same, try the ram in another slot.
If still the same, get a new psu to try in the system.
If it is booting up normal, add in the extra ram,dvd drive, pci cards, graphics card you have, one at a time and boot up inbetween each addition untill you find the culprit.!
 
Sadly it could be the motherboard as well, check for bad caps. Had an AB9 pro pass through here a while ago with some leaky caps that were causing the intermittent boot issue and siren problem as it was causing voltage to go out of spec. Though on the whole i don't think that particular board has cap issues, must've been a bad run or something! Recapped the leaky caps (3 of them) and it worked fine.

Could well be the psu though, caps again :D
 
Looks very much like it is the power supply. The 3 orange 3.3v connectors on the ATX connector have gone brown, the connector on the motherboard is also a little discoloured but seems intact.
 
Hmm, got the new power supply and it's not working at all now :(

I'm getting 1 long beep followed by 3 shorter ones and then it powers off straight away. The Motherboard code is showing code 87 which is CPU voltage.

Am I right in thinking the 3 discoloured connectors at the right hand end of the motherboard connector are the ones supplying the 3.3v cpu voltage?

Is there anything else I can try before buying a new motherboard and CPU? The only things I had done was reseat the graphics card and removed and re-installed the heatsink.
 
Would I be better off spending £60-70 getting a replacement motherboard to take my old E6600 or would it be more cost effective to buy a more modern motherboard, faster CPU and 4GB of faster RAM?

I don't really use the PC for anything that intensive anymore, just web browsing, email, AV, watching films really so it seems a bit of a waste.
