Ok issue is when stress testing and sometimes gaming my pc will turn off then start itself back up. Event logs reports nothing except your system shutdown was unexpected.

System spec
Asus Z9PE-D8 board
Dual Xeon E5-2660 v1
8x4gb hyper-x ddr3 1866
Dual Corsair H110iGT's
Zotac AMP OMEGA GTX980Ti
1 ssd
4 hdd's
raid card
Enermax 1500watt platimax

Total system draw is around 565watt in the few moments it lasts a stress test. The graphics card is brand new, board and cpu's ran off a 650w psu with a GT210 graphics card previously, the enermax powered a i5 760 and r9 290 before I took ownership however it is 2 years old.

So I am at a loss. A friend suggested it is something to do with PCI Express 3 however gpu-z says the card is pci-e 2.0 and I can not make it say 3.0.

Also I was running a r9 290 last week and started to get this power off issue when playing a new game the new homeworld deserts of kharak but other games were fine so I assumed it was just the game. But now with the new nvidia card the system is powering off more it must be something else!

Does this sound like psu issue to anyone? Loading on one of the rails maybe?

Yes I have asked Enermax and waiting for a reply. I am raising this on here in the hope someone has an idea on what to test? Or seen this kind of power off issue before?

I'm a bit confused, sorry..How far does it get before it restarts? During POST, when windows starts, during Windows usage or gaming?

I would try disconnecting everything you don't need and try again. If all works under stress, then you know that either one of the devices is causing you a problem or the load is just too much.. although that's unlikely with a 1200w PSU.

In the meantime, if you are able to get into windows, go into control panel>System>Advanced System Settings.

Under the Advanced tab, untick "automatically restart" and note where the system dump is being placed. If the problem re-occurs and windows can monitor the problem, you'll get a blue screen.

Sorry to be confusing.

I can now game, use windows etc. The only time it crashes now is when benching. Any gpu stress test like the stress test in gpuz on full screen it will crash after 3-5 seconds ish.

Raid card, fans, extra drives have been disconnected too. But still crashes when stressing graphics.

Enermax just replied suggesting spread the pci-e load over 2 rails. So maybe it is a psu issue....

Are you overclocking? Have you ttied a CPU test such as prime for straight CPU or blend testing?

It doesn't sound like a PSU problem to me but it might be that the RAM, CPU or GPU aren't getting enough power.

No overclocking. CPU testing prime95 for an hour is fine. Cpu's stay sub 44c. Only appears to be graphic tests that kill the system.

I was using a r9 290 last week. Everything was fine until I started playing that new game, then it repeatedly crashed. Off the top of my head i didn't think a 980ti used as much power as a r9 290 but maybe it does.

Started playing a game or when you switched card.. I'm trying to narrow this down to a single event. Did everything work fine with the 290?

Do you have a spare HDD floating around? If so install a fresh copy of windows on that with up to date chipset and Nvidia drivers and re-test. If that works then it's a problem with the OS/drivers on your current OS installation.

Everything worked fine with the 290 until I started playing homeworld.

I have reinstalled windows already when the 290 was crashing with homeworld. I have not reinstalled with the 980ti installed. It is on my to do list.

But I am keen to get home and try the wiring diagram enermax sent me.

Just to update the psu is the issue. Doesn't matter which combination of rails I used to power the graphics card the system would power off under stress. Gaming is now fine, it is only benchmarking which kills it.

Weirdly I powered cpu1 and the 980ti off a 650w last night and used the 1500w to power just cpu2 and 3 sata powers and it was all fine. Though it did sound like the 650w was dieing....

So there you go, a 2 year old Enermax Platimax 1500watt fails to power dual xeon's and a 980ti.
