This is the spec im thinking of getting, im after something around the £550 mark. Is there anything ive listed here that is just completely unnecessary, incompatible or overkill. The pc im after is just for basic games, like lotr bfme 2, empire: total war and wow. Im trying to lower the price of this pc build and still keep a high performance / hopefully silent pc.

hmm, i was thinking though, is the motherboard 'too good' for the rest of the parts, or do i even need a pc cooling system, or is there a cheaper processor thats nearly as good? like a 4mb one or something, as i want to get the price down a bit

You could drop the cpu to E5200 / E5300 which is a cut down version of the one you originaly suggested, and change the board to a P43 chipset, ie the Gigabyte EP43-DS3.
There are several versions and you may need to check the Gigabyte website and see what features you may need.

Edit: That should save around £100 ~
I think you need to buy some fans for the case have a look at these, if you want to buy a different cpu cooler have a look the Tuniq Tower or Arctic cooler 7.

ok thanks, how many of those fans would i need? and would they work in the 300 case? Also, would i need to buy fan guards for each fan?

you could save another £20 by just getting the case incl PSU, antec 300 + basic 550W, still a good PSU

ps - what the difference between duel core and 'core 2 duo' - or are they just the same but different names? Also, what does the FSB mean on processors?

Regards the cpu cooler, the CPU comes with an Intel stock cooler which in my opinion are not that great, The AC7 is a good cooler for the price, but the Tunia Tower gets recommended alot for builds and if you do deside to overclock will be a good buy.

But like I mentioned earlier, double check the Gigabyte web site to compare the different vs of the board just in case one board something you want, ie fire wire or RAID.

Intel named the lower range Pentium dual core, the E5200/E5300 is simular to the E8XXX range but with few things removed - Intel use Quad pumped FSB on the CPU - the E8XXX range runs at 333mhz (1333mhz quad pumped), were the lower versions run at 266 or 200 (1066mhz or 800mhz quad pumped)

Hopefuly I have explained it ok - I am sure some will correct me if I am wrong :D

I probably wont be overclocking, basically because i dont have a clue how. should i not use this tunia tower now and use the ac7 instead? Also, what OS would you reccommend for this build, vista 64bit?

Go for the AC7 if your not overclocking but! Tuniq Tower is a good cooler the choice is down to you saving the £10 odd :p, either one in my opinion will be a good choice :)
Vista HP 64bit will be the perfect choice.
