Does Xbox One stand a chance against PS4? Comparison ?

I can see absolutely no appeal whatsoever for buying an Xbox One unless you simply have to buy their exclusives or want the Kinect.

The PS4 advantages are:
  • Cheaper
  • Better Specs
  • Plays games offline
  • Games can be traded
  • Better design (my opinion)

Overall the PS4 is for gamers, the Xbox One is for an entertainment system for the whole family.

This really. As I said in the other thread, MS must have thought that the PS4 was going to be £499 and not be able to play used games.

This figure is being updated all the time. Looks pretty one-sided so far.

I keep hearing people compare the XBone to VCRs, which seems a little unfair.

VCRs work without internet.

But jokes aside, there seems to be very little in the XBone's favour here. It's more expensive, and more restrictive than the PS4, and will stop working if there's a problem with your internet. Of course, there will always be hardcore XBox fans who will buy it for the exclusives like Halo and whatnot, but outside that core set of fans, I don't see it selling well at all.

Even though it looks like MS has totally bottled it, I am willing to bet on it that Sony has one or two things up it sleeve that gamers will not be happy about.

If you looks at the feedback coming from some corners of the industry, they are adamant that this type of thing was inevitable. Sony might just be happy enough to let MS take the brunt of the fallout before instituting similar measures in the future. Basically I don't trust either of the two companies to do the "right" thing, and looking back on Sony's history, they certainly are not any watermark of respectability when it comes to the Console business.

Also, the next-gen will stretch across a looooong period of time, and the winner will not be decided in the first few months past release. MS still has time to create its killer apps, and the story in the U.S. will be vastly different to that in the EU.

So TLDR, there are many factors to consider here. At the end of the day I don't give a toss, because I intend to stick with PC, and would prefer a high-end GPU or two over a next-gen console any day.

One factor people aren't looking at is the game bundles that stores will be offering with these consoles. Whichever has the best bundles will sell better (assuming they aren't bundled with the same games).

In the past, release day bundles are usually £300 console + £40 game for £325. Also, I can't really see why one console would have much better bundles than the other. Even if the Xbox did have better release games and better bundles, it's still going to be hidden beneath that £80 price difference.

Maybe at launch but what's to stop Microsoft making deals with retailers to include an extra controller and a months gold live membership. There are always a few tricks they can pull to appear better value despite being at a higher price.

The X1 is still going to sell millions. There are a lot of MS "fanboys" that simply won't even consider getting anything other than an Xbox. Plus there are people that won't be bothered by any of the negative press the X1 has got.

Yes they are fanboys because they like what it offers  I want to play Forza personally, just like I want to play Uncharted etc. I buy a console to play games I want to play not because of who makes it, I imagine it's the same for everyone?

This, I expect xbone to be behind ps4 numbers at launch and for several years. I do think over the long term, it's a far more flexible system and could see some very good multimedia and other uses added, something I think would be much harder to push out on ps4, so over the full 7years is a bit harder to judge, wether those features would be enough to claw back and overtake who knows.

You have to remeber this forum is a tech forum and we don't represent the public, I doubt most normal gamers will care to much.

I purposely put "fanboy" in the quotation marks because that it was everybody called anybody that likes a particular brand, not because I was calling them fanboys.
My point was that people will buy the X1 because they like the Xbox and whatever games/features it has.

I'd be interested to know your thoughts of the DS4 if you used it and how felt it compared to the 360 pad.

From what i've seen and read the DS4 is miles better than the DS3. I've even heard people complaining about the new X1 pad saying the new shoulder buttons on it are a bit crap.

Really? everything I have read is full of praise for the new pad.

It's difficult to say but it does depend on how many Xbox 360 fans stick with Microsoft for the next gen - that'll be an indication of loyalty and how popular it could end up being. There are definitely those who will refuse to buy a Sony console full stop; certain people I know have nothing good to say about the PS3 and, as far as I can see, they won't even consider buying a PS4.

In my opinion the attitude of Sony before the start of this gen with their 'the next gen starts when we say it does' comment seems similar to the powers that be at Microsoft right now with some of the things the're saying.

I just find it refreshing that Sony are producing a games console. Nothing more than it needs to be. We're definitely seeing a different Sony at the moment, fundamentally different from the Sony we knew at the start of this gen.
