What is the best place to get pet insurance from for my dogs?

I just phoned petplan to talk it through with someone and the indian lady I spoke to was impossible to understand. liketalkingtosomeonethatneverspacedwordscorrectly. Annoying.

Ideas please :)

Thanks,

Jon

Define 'best'.

I use PetPlan - they are generally recognised as providing the most comprehensive cover & service, but they are expensive.

My little Westie costs £18/month for top level cover, and that's from when he was a 12 week old pup. The older they are when you insure them the more it will cost.

I've always spoken to an English person at PetPlan btw...

We use petplan and have done from my dog being a pup. I'm pretty sure we got a leaflet etc from our vets.

Costs me just under 200 quid a year. Sounds a lot but one course of tablets he needed was like that by itself so it's always a good idea.

My previous dog before I didn't have insurance. One set of specialist vet work he needed cost me over £1500.00.

Have they not got a website?

Suggest reading the moneysavingexpert guide to pet insurance. Using their search engine Argos of all people came up by far the cheapest even with their better plans

On paper they provide the same benefits as PetPlan etc.

Not sure where we did it, got a leaflet from the vets but the gf sorted it, mabie it was online, but weve got an £80 excess on him.

Petplan are good but have some nasty clauses in their T&C's

We got advised from the Vets to use Marks & Spencers (£5/month for our cat) as they were very good and dont stop you claiming for the same thing should it happen again and again (which pet plan do).

We never had to use them until recently when our cat had a heart attack due to it's hard being oversized. In 4 days of treatment we racked up nearly £1000 of bills and M&S paid it directly to the vet without us having to pay then claim back (which is good as I dont have £1000 spare).

I would deffinitely give M&S pet insurance a try.

Forgot to say, we have no excess with them either.

We've got our cat with Marks & Spencer.
The main reason is that the animal is covered for life for an illness so long as you keep on paying the premiums.
So if our cat is diagnosed with something that means she needs medication for the rest of her life, so long as we keep on paying the premium each year she keeps on getting the treatment.
Most/a lot of insurance policies don't do this.
M&S also don't have an upper age limit on your pet either.

We're with Petplan too. Can't remember exactly how much it was to insure our Westie, think it may have been £18 (same as Havana). When we took out the insurance he was about 10 weeks old.

Whats the execess on these policies like? Most of the plans I have looked at have a £50 excess and my vets bills are always £49.--something.

Edit: Insurance supermarket can quote for pet insurance just got it for £8 a month as oppossed to Petplan £20 a month

I use to pay a lot to Petplan until I made a claim that spanned two years of treatment .... they then paid out the fees less two years excess at £60 per year .... so a claim for something like £360 was paid out as £240.

I was not happy as I had 3 dogs insured with them and let them know ...... they didn't give a ****!

Ya pays ya money and takes ya chance.

Think my dog is with petplan, M+S sounds very good though.

From expeirence though I can say avoid Direct Line pet insurance with a barge pole, they take ages to pay out (would you expect anything less from a car insurer  ) and they will find any way they can to get out of a claim, my dog had to have the snip because one of his balls didn't drop so if he got testicular cancer it would have caused major problems. At first we phoned Direct Line and they said they'd pay out for the op as it was a preventative measure but after the op they said it was a pre-existing condition (born like it) and wouldn't pay out!

poor little guy :( All I can advise is have it done as soon as possible, we left it for about 2 years and now he gets very very touchy if another dog has a look 'down there' and will get in a fight with them, he used to be very passive around other dogs and nothing ever got to him but since the snip he can get a bit aggressive with other dogs.

Yea thats what others have said he might get aggressive, but the vet said something about if they remove both balls he could get other way and get really depressed :/ so dunno either way its not good :( and yea were going to get him done soon, vet said he can get done in 10-12months old
