My 4 months old Malamute has been living in the house and and he has learned to do the deeds during his walks. Unfortunately, ever since I started letting him roam the yard unsupervised, he turned a certain area of the yard into his personal toilet. Our walk tonight ended after 30 mins during which he did bugger all only to do it in the yard as soon as we got back.

Suggestions?

I have a dog my self and either way if its outside the yard or in the yard you have to pick it up, so to me it doesn't make much difference. Least the dog has the sense to keep it to one area and not the whole yard. :P

Go on 12 hour walks after feeding the dog a bucket of vindaloo. That should have the desired effect.

Yes I have to pick it up anyway but I want to see it and pick it up right away, as it happens during the walks, rather than let it stink up the place or end up on someone's shoe..

You can train him to do it in one area. You cannot train him to wait until you decide to walk him, that is not how bowels work.

You should not have a dog.

Owner of 3 dogs here. Keep up a routine of walk times and don't let him into the yard. Will soon get used to the routne but ou might have some internal accidents until it works out.

Sometimes it just can't be helped and they need to go out sooner or later. Mine go out 3 times a day though so they're pretty well catered for. Routine is key, they know when they're gonna go exactly. Well until daylight savngs messes it up haha.

Dog is touching cloth for the walk then doing it just after the walk, if I've read the OP correctly, so I'm not sure your post makes any sense.

Well I don't know. Can you tell for certain when a dog is 'touching cloth'? My point is a dog should be allowed to excrete when it needs to and not when its owner wants it to.

A small treat when they do their business out and about and as above don't let him straight into the garden after a walk.
