A police dog has been accused of running a woman over in a pickup truck.

The animal was apparently left in the vehicle's cab while its handler went to check out a report of a domestic disturbance.

The engine was left running to keep the air conditioning going.

The dog, a German shepherd called Ranger, is then thought to have knocked the vehicle into gear.

It lurched forward towards Mary Stone, who was walking to her postbox in Ogden, Utah, US.

Officers realised the danger and shouted to her, but she was unable to move quickly enough to get out of the way.

She was run over by a front and rear tyre, and suffered a fractured pelvis and tailbone.

"She had tyre marks on her clothes," husband Paul Stone said.

The truck then went through the Stones' yard and hit a vehicle in the driveway.

bizarre, the dog knocked the vehicle into gear?

Poor women though, she must be very tired after the experience.

Stupid dog though, should have pulled up the barking brake to stop the car.

Seems like a poorly designed vehicle to me.

I've just got back from the states, and the car I had (Pontiac G6) had an auto box with the gear stick in the traditional place, and wouldnt engage drive unless you first put your foot on the brakes.

Very sad for the woman but on the bright side she wont ever have to work again. Its america afterall she will sue for about 99billion zillion dollars and win. If the dog gets destroyed ill go over there and kill all concerned!!!

Yes we saw what you did there ...... ;)

a lot of people don't bother with the parking brake unless they are leaving the car completely - like they've arrived home or whatever. Park usually works just as well on an automatic unless you have a dog that stamps on it!

I once had a couple of dogs on a run down to birmingham and i left them in the car when I was doing the handover and when I got back to the car I realised one had stood on the central locking button while the keys were in the ignition!

Had to try to encourage it to wander back and forth in an attempt to get it to stand on the button again - we were there more than half an hour but eventually he stood on it and the doors opened!
