Dolby atmos upgrade for PC

Hi, not sure if this is the right forum section to post this but.. I've ordered an LG CX48 which I'm going to use as a PC monitor when my 3080 eventually turns up, mainly for playing games and watching films.

I'm pretty useless when it comes to audio setups so was wondering if someone can help me with a few questions.

At the moment i'm just using a standard logitech 5.1 set of speakers but was thinking of upgrading it to a Dolby atmos soundbar. Something like the JBL 9.1 https://www.avforums.com/reviews/jbl-bar-9-1-soundbar-review.17696

From my understanding I would connect HDMI from GPU to the TV and then use EARC back to the soundbar, just wondering if that sounded correct.

Also wondering how it works when not playing or watching Dolby atmos content.... Does the soundbar and rear speakers just work like regular 5.1 speakers, just not using the upward firing speakers?

Help would be appreciated or any better suggestions for a setup... was thinking a soundbar just for ease or connecting it up.

Honestly, I've never heard a soundbar that sounded "good". Some say the Sennheiser Ambeo is decent, but it's very expensive and I haven't heard it, so can't vouch for it.

I can promise you that an AV receiver and speakers will sound an order of magnitude better than any soundbar. Even if you only start out with 5.1. Get a Dolby Atmos capable receiver (Denon); 5 decent speakers; and a subwoofer and I guarantee you that it'll be qualitatively better than your current setup..

Irrespective of whether you use a receiver or a soundbar; EARC works as you describe.

The CX48 is a great display. I use a C9 as my main PC gaming display. Wouldn't go back to LCD.

That is correct. Will let your GPU get 120hz, G-Sync (once fixed) 4k and all that goodness while the audio pass's through to the soundbar via eARC.

I do not know what happens with that specific soundbar. But in my Atmos setup, the channels get used accordingly. So if the content is 2 channel, only front 2 channels, 5 channel audio then only my 5.1 setup and ATMOS when I play atmos content like Gears of war 5, Tomb raider or netflix content. I do need to download Dolby Access which is free to select Dolby Atmos for Home theatre in the speaker settings area. I imagine the sound bar will be similar.

Also I've been reading about how some people get high audio latency or their audio lagging behind the picture when connecting from TV to a soundbar or receiver when you sing eARC. Is this a common problem ?

It can be common for any audio device via any connection from any source. There is no definite list of what setup will induce lag since there are so many potential configurations. A soundbar might work perfectly fine for one tv, but have a little lag on another tv for example. The same for AV receivers.

But pretty much all devices will have options to tweak this in the menus so its not really an 'issue', more a potential setup tweak if it occurs.

Just got my LG CX48 yesterday. using it as a monitor. Just double checking... I have my PC connected to the TV, then the eARC to my Q90r soundbar. Dolby atmos is set up on PC. "Sound out" is set to HDMI ARC. I have eARC selected and "Digital sound out" set to Pass through. But in "HDMI Input Audio Format" do i select PCM or Bitstream for the HDMI slot my pc is connected to?
