I'm after a domain, which I knew someone else had but never got updated. When I've looked on 123-reg today, it still shows as taken, but doing the whois gives the following information:

Relevant dates:
Registered on: 28-Jan-2006
Renewal date: 28-Jan-2008
Last updated: 21-Mar-2006

When will it become available to me to swipe? :)

There is a grace period which the owner gets to renew the domain and then another period before the domain becomes available again. Think its roughly 90 days in total from the expiry date.

You get holding firms that buy up domain names and sit on them, usually with a ***p web page directing you to an agent who can sell you the domain for an outlandish fee.
Im stuck waiting for my domain...
do they buy them automatically?

I have a domain which has expired and I know the date I can buy it at a different registrar.

Are I doomed?

all depends on how quick they are, you might get in there if they don't renew it, but if they are the holder, then they will get plenty of reminders to renew - just keep a close eye on it

The site's had nothing on for years and was only ever updated once :p It's somebody else stepping in that I'm more bothered about.

You will never beat a domain snapping company to a dropped domain.
So if the domain is even slightly interesting then you will probably not get it.
The domain snapping company use software that snap the domain within a milisecond of it dropping.

If it is a domain that you really want then you should consider actually paying a snapping company to grab it for you.
Sure it will cost you a little more, but it is your best chance of getting it should it drop.

The thing is - once a domain has been registered there will be traffic and there will be a rating associated with that domain.
So even if it isn't a name many people will desire, most search engines will list it and bots will visit the site regularly.

So it means you can buy a dropped domain and instantly be appearing in seach engines.
Compare this to a newly registered domain, unless you pay for placing it can take anything up to 6 months before bots start to visit.

It's now changed to:

Registration status:
Renewal required.
*** This registration has been SUSPENDED. ***

What does this mean?

Can you tell I want this domain? :p

EDIT: Nominet aren't very helpful, but I eventually found this: http://www.nic.uk/registrants/maintain/renew/

Therefore, it can still be renewed at any point in those 90 days? I've got to wait it out until the 28th April and hope they don't renew?

I think Network Solutions lets you put in an order on a domain that is about to expire so that you have a better chance of being first in line...

if its generic in the slightest [word, 3 letter acronym or even 2 words] it'll get picked up by speculative domain catchers - domain will delete on 6th may if it has a tagholder, 29th april if it doesn't.
