domain email via gmail. explain how?

so i'm finally getting round to dealing with this spam issue i have. my work pc is ok at dealing with spam as it has a junk filter, but it doesn't get it all missing at least 2 messages a day per account, and my phone gets none so if the pc is off my phone is just constantly alerting me to spam messages.

i've been suggested by users on this site to set up my domain email addresses to go through gmail but don't understand how fully.

i've got 10 work email addresses. does each address need to go though a different gmail address?

all these emails are set up using imap.

i want to continue using the addresses as i do with thunderbird and my phone app and windows mail app.

is this possible when sent through gmail as i'd expect the email address i'd need to set up would be the @gmail one so that the spam filter takes place?
 
Yes Google Apps is frequently recommended on these forums. I use it myself.

Basically it's a domain-wide service, not just per mailbox. I'm assuming your domain's email is currently forwarded to an Exchange server? Basically you will have to bin the Exchange server and set up your domain to forward email data to Google's servers. This means if you set up 'example.com' with Google, any email sent to that domain will end up directly on Google's servers, completely bypassing the Exchange server.

I'm also assuming you're not the Admin, so you won't be able to do this yourself unfortunately.
 
Oh I understand the situation now. Yeah you don't have an exchange server. I thought by "10 work email address" you were given these by your workplace in which case it would probably be hosted on an Exchange server, but I realize you've set it up yourself so it's done by Vidahost.

I hate to say this but I've had a look at the Google Apps website and unfortunately the free service has been discontinued since last year. They're asking $50 per year-per mailbox which sounds a bit much. :(
 
Do all of the addresses go to the same mailbox?
If so get Office 365 small business at £3.90 a month. you could create rules so that the email going to different addresses go into their own folder.
 
If it is just email you are after then you could have a look at Zoho they are a free alternative to Google Apps. I have never used them but I it might be worth a look in to :)
