Hi all

Wasn't sure quite the best forum for this to go in so thought I'd try here first.

I have a domain name registered to me, which is due for renewal fairly soon which I do want to do.

However, at present I don't have any web hosting etc and my domain service is a forwarding service which used to point at some free space I had from my ISP, I'm no longer with them so I currently have nothing up.

I would like to use a different webhost as there are much cheaper ones than the company I originally registered my domain with.

Basically my question is, can I renew/reregister with a different webhost or do I need to reregister with my existing company and can I get wbehosting from else where?

You should be able to transfer the domain across. Look at what the cheaper option is, and then contact your domain registrar to see what they can do about transferring.

You say that your domain name is coming up for renewal "soon".
What do you call soon?
A domain transfer can take a week plus and you do not want the domain expiring during that transfer process as that can cause some problems.

You can leave the domain name where it is.
You can still get web hosting from whoever you like - you simply point the NS records for your domain at what ever the webhost tells you to.
An example of this is all of my domain names.
I have them stored with 123-reg.co.uk
However my hosting is spread between two companies in the US - I simply point the nameservers for my domains to the webhosts.

The other option is to physically transfer the domain name to whoever you like.
If you can save a lot of money then go for it - I know that I could save a couple of £ on my domain names by moving from 123-reg, however I'm extremely happy with their service, so I pay that little more.

If you want to transfer the domain to another company the process is a little more involved and also depends on what kind of domain name it is.
A .uk domain is a "push" system where you ask your current domain holding company to change the IPSTag for you.
Where as .com/.net domains are pull where you ask your new holding company to pull the domain in for you.

Domain renewal is (IIRC) 7th June, so it's coming up fairly soon but gives me enough time to get something sorted.

Domain is registered with 123-reg but they're hosting is fairly pricey compared to some, was hoping go with someone like one.com

Wasn't quite sure how it worked if you had hosting elsewhere. When I still had webspace from my ISP i had to set a forwarding address and needed to use a forwarding frame (or something like that) to keep the address in the address bar as my domain name, is this how it will work with some proper hosting?

Not quite.
If you log into your 123-reg Control Panel and bring up the details on your domain name, at the moment (if I remember correctly) the nameservers will be set to:
ns.123-reg.co.uk & ns2.123-reg.co.uk
This means that the nameservers at 123-reg are authoritive for your domain name.
So anyone in the world attempting to access your website - it is 123-reg's nameservers that tell the world where to look.

Let us say that you decided you wanted to get some hosting with a company called acmeroadrunner hosting.
They tell you to change the nameservers to:
ns.acme.com & ns2.acme.com

You log into your 123-reg control panel and do just that.
Your domain name is still with 123-reg and you continue to pay the yearly renewal fee for the domain name only.
However your hosting is now with acmeroadrunner hosting and you will pay them for the hosting part of things.

I see, that sounds pretty simple, will most likely keep the domain registered with 123-reg then and simply find myself some other hosting.

Thanks for your help.
