Hi There,

Is there anyway that I can change the DNS settings stored with my domain name without going threw my host?

I am having a debate with them about some charges that they have put on the account and as a result I want to move to a better web host.

Obviously I would not expect them to co-operate too much!

Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply.

I have signed up for hosting elsewhere.

They new hosts tell me that I have to update the DNS entry for my domain name.

But I need to be able to do this without going threw my current hosts.

do you not have some sort of web control panel that you have access to?

Your domain registrar usually does this. However, if there is no lock on the domain, you can take it to your new registrar and they should be able to alter the DNS entry for your domain.

Sorry just saw this.

So how can I tell if the Domain is locked?

do a WhoIS on the domain name, it should tell you the lock status of your domain name in the details found.

looks like either yourself or your new registrar will have to go through them to get the domain name moved over then..

Is it a .co.uk domain? If so, if you are listed in the whois as the registrant/contact, Nominet will make the changes for you if your registrar won't. Nominet may charge, however, but they are a non-profit :)

With other root registrars (such as, say Enom) it can be a lot harder if you're a reseller's customer. Especially if the reseller is still in business.

Better idea to solve the charge disputes first if poss :)
